Sorry if this is a really stupid question or been covered before but:

I've noticed that the BM's don't sharpen as well on the Sharpmaker as other knives. It's starting to piss me off cause I can't figure out what's goin on. I tested em against 5 other knives vs. paper. All of them got noticably sharper while neither of the BM's I sharpened did. Same number of strokes and same amount of pressure. While virtually all my other knives have a literally hair popping edge after some work with the Sharpmaker, the BM's just don't seem to. Is it the 440C or am I just a sped or what's going on? Has no one else noticed this and I should just keep working at it?

It maybe just an issue with the angles of the edges. If the angles on your Benchmade knives is too steep, you might not even be hitting the edge with the Sharpmaker. Try outlining the edge of the knife with a marker and see how much of the edge is getting sharpened.

Also, are your stones set at 30 or 40 degrees? If at 30, your only re-shaping the bevel.

just keep working on it. you're having to reshape the edge of the blade (removing a lot of material) and that takes a long time on the medium and fine stones.
once you get the bevel set you'll see great results similar to your other knives.

I suspect the previous posters are right. Keep working at it. Reprofile the factory bevel with the medium hones and then move on.

I sharpen both my Benchmade 550 Griptilian and my 806D2 AXIS AFCK on a Sharpmaker no problemo. I used the recommended 20 stroked at each step the first time for the 440C Grip blade and 50 strokes for the AXIS AFCK's D2 blade. I made a 40* edge with a 30* back bevel on the Grip and a straight 30* edge on the D2. The 806D2's edge is really shiny (thanks to my Ultra Fine hones) and looks really cool (although the polished edge might compromise performance for some cutting tasks).

P.S. Sounds like an excuse to buy the diamond hones :D

Thanks guy :)

I just kept on working on it. About 20 minutes (+ all the other times I've spent on it) of sharpening I'd say and it started getting really sharp. Now it's 'good'. And dylan, I have no idea.

On my sharpmaker the base is marked "40 degrees" near one set of holes and "30 degree back bevel" near the other set of holes. IIRC the training booklet and tape suggest using the 30* angle first to create a 30 degree back bevel. Then, in most cases, you finish the edge at 40* to create a stronger edge (than a 30* edge). I think dylan was asking whether you were using the 30* or 40* "end" of the Sharpmaker.

Yes. Dead on. You probably need to reprofile. Spyderco now offers diamond hones for the Sharpmaker which make reprofiling a breeze (at a cost, however  ).
