I'm getting closer to my ideal carry

Back in my Modern Phase, it wasn't unusual for me to carry at least five knives (or more) on me, for no other reason that I could, and I liked them, it's the gadget thing, technicians are genetically predisposed to carrying cool or useful gadgets, that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

it was the typical combo of a SAK, a large OHO (for "emergencies/mobile ambulatory cadavers" ) a small OHO (something friendly to KNP), a pocket toy, and whatever latest shiny thing I had recently purchased.....

That said, the blade that generally saw the most use was the small OHO, mainly because it's all I needed it for, everything else was dead weight....

Then came "the awakening", one day I decided to put away my pocket trinkets, and limit myself to just a Spyderco UKPK clip point, and Opinel #6 in carbon steel, (and a Vic Pioneer for the tools) I still kept my trinkets close by in my backpack, as I need my Leatherman and SAK CyberTool 34 for repairing electronics at work, but for general knife use, I would limit myself to Opi #6 and UKPK, with the #6 as the primary, see how long I could resist the urge to load up

One Year Later....

The combo of UKPK , Pioneer, and #6 worked perfectly, and I was never found wanting, those three handled everything I tossed at them...

The only reason I ended the experiment was that I misplaced the UKPK, and needed a knife to take it's place, because I found I truly enjoyed the simpler world that lead me to Traditionals.....

Long story short, I still carry a few more knives than "necessary", again, because I like them, but the whole ambiance and feel of the traditional knife is warmer and more inviting, reminds me of simpler, happier times, and yes, the "backup" knives are still in my bag, just in case I need a specialized tool, but my actual cutting duties and other uses are simply and adeptly handled by.....

Case Peanut
Case Sodbuster Jr.
Victorinox Pioneer or Scout

The 'nut handles 98% of my cutting tasks
The SBJ is for when I need a little more reach
The Vic is for the tools....

Push comes to shove? I could easily be happy with nothing more than a Peanut, SBJ, and an Alox Farmer (the saw, gotta have the saw... :) )

Will I still carry more than I "need to"?
Sure, for no other reason than I can***, but I feel comfortable that these three blades can easily handle any task I encounter in my day to day travels

Plus, my pocketses will end up a bit lighter as well....

***that and that whole "be prepared" thing (also why I carry a couple flashlights, a DMT Fine diamond sharpening card in my wallet, a Stainless Sharpie pen, Fisher Bullet pen, and Zippo lighter (even though I don't smoke),

You sir are approaching an epiphany... KISS = Keep it Simple Stupid! As we traverse through life we come to this realization that you "just don't need all that stuff"! At least not often enough to merit carrying it around 24/7. There are exceptions certainly - your vocation, etc but generally most of use carry way too much stuff.

Congrats and great selection of your "Trinity"

It's part of how we live in this day and age, we have excess. I'm the same way, I really just need my Buck 301, but carry 2 sometimes 3 other knives along with it. It's a free (well sort of) country carry what you like. I've turned into an EDC type slowly, but surely. I like using, and finding uses for new gear. You sound like you're on the right track. Finding out what works, but still experimenting. Traditional patterns have a lot to offer, even in this day and age, I'd go as far as to call some timeless, they just work, especially the peanut.

Oh forgot to add, I found the UKPK a couple weeks ago, hiding in a couch crevice (stupid pocket clip..), so after removing the clip, and inspecting it (no damage) I put it.....

...back in the knife box with my other moderns, I'll still use it, it is a nice knife after all, but it's been replaced by a traditional (Case SBJ, more than likely)....

I've also got a Farmer on order at KTP, to use up some store credit ("free" knife, woo!) and when it comes in, it'll likely knock the Pioneer out of pocket

This is sooo true, but it's also unfortunate that the epiphany rarely happens until we reach a certain age.

I have gotten by with the nut for a little over a week now. It or a Cadet does what I've been needing. I still carry another knife just for fun, but I've really only been needing a nut.

I may already have my ideal carry right now, no "need" for the Alox Farmer (but we all know how much "need" has to do with it, right?) ;)

Chestnut CV Peanut
Yeller CV Soddie Jr
Vic. One handed trekker plain edge
I consider the OHT a traditional, after all, it IS a SAK, plus it has a nice long saw, and a bunch of other useful tools, including a much more heavy duty pry tool/screwdriver/cap lifter than the standard size SAK, and since I'd be carrying the Pioneer/farmer for it's tools anyway.....

If I didn't love the Alox scales as much as I do, I'd be perfectly happy with the OHT as my third knife of the triplex, but the utter utility of the OHT is undeniable, and isn't utility one of the many reasons we favor Traditionals here?

Besides, if I swapped the OHT for the Farmer, I'd be giving up some saw length, and a heavy duty pry tool only to gain a nicer awl and tougher scales... Oops, slipping back into the "comparing specs" "modern" mindset there, either SAK would work fine...

I consider the OHT a traditional, after all, it IS a SAK,

Blades with holes for one-hand opening are not traditional, no matter who makes them.

There are even some knives made by WR Case which we do not discuss in this forum.
