Most of you are probably familiar with the situation: get an awesome knife, sell a bunch of knives you no longer use... And then, shortly after, really really want a new knife.

Problem is, I can't seem to find one I want. I don't like serrations, assisted openers, or the lack of a pocket clip. I have a Kershaw Ram, a Tenacious, an Endura Wave, and the Gayle Bradley that was responsible for me selling all of my others ( Para2s, Southard, Skyline, Manix XL, Groove, my Enlans, Sage 2, ZT0561...) Love that thing. It needs friends, though.

I need suggestions! I keep looking at the same knives and brands and being pretty disinterested in 'em.

Any sort of things you are looking for in a new knife? Or pretty much open to whatever? What brands have you been looking at? see if we can recommend something you never thought to look at.

I like sturdy knives. Knives that lock up with no play and don't develop play easily. I typically dislike soft steels like AUS8 (but I do carry a Tuff Lite at work in the place of a boxcutter), and, yeah, I'm pretty much open to whatever. Weight is an issue, to a degree - if it weighs more than 6oz, it weighs too much for my pants to stay up with all of the other stuff I carry with me at work.

I've been looking at Hogue recently, lustfully waiting for the Sandvik CRKT Swindle, and I've started looking at the Spyderco Nishijin Lum Chinese - the liner is pretty thin, however, and it looks more like a gentleman's folder than a tool.

Hogue has really caught my eye - I like button locks. I had a folding boxcutter that had a button lock, and it was fun to use. My main concerns with Hogues are that I don't like secondary locks (LAWKS, rotoblocks, etc), and I've yet to find if one can open a Hogue by depressing the button and swinging the blade out (instead of using the thumbstuds)

You have your eye on a great knife and yes you can flick it open and closed by just holding the button and the thumb studs are a nice size and the detent isnt to strong so you never have to worry about sore thumbs. You get several handle styles to choose from which is always nice they have black or green aluminum, black or green "Gmascus" (swirled g10) or polymer in black or brown. Also the choice of drop point or tanto which i went drop point. They are very well built elishewitz does stress tests on youtube. Even when the pivot is tightened up its still buttery smooth. Oh and the secondary lock is for open position only it doesnt lock closed

I've been looking at the wharncliffe EX-04 in black/white G-Mascus - aye, I can't find one negative word about 'em, other than people not being happy with the secondary lock feature. A lot of people seem to intentionally permanently disable it.

I've had these; some of them I've had many of, like PM2's. Recently, I've liked Grayman Dua and right now I'm happily stuck on Three Sisters Forge Beast. Those two are about 3.25" and 3.00" from tip to handle, but about 4mm blade thickness with still a thin cutting edge. Dua is S30V. The Beast can be had in M390, which is an outstanding blade-steel. If I wanted something larger, I'd go after the VECP v2.

I am also looking at Hogue Knives - Maybe these videos will help?

That VECP looks pretty good... I've been wanting to branch out into different blade steels. The only M390 knife I've ever owned was immediately sold before I even used it due to some bills, and all I've used are:
8Cr13MoV
440C
VG-10
S30V
Elmax
204P
13c27 Sandvik
M4

I kinda want to try:
S35VN (it seems to alleviate all of the issues I had with S30V)
M390 (Still upset I never got to try it out)
ZDP-189 (Love keen edges)
Super Blue
S110V (Still waiting for that Native to come out...)
3V (Still wish the Spyderco Tuff didn't weigh 10 tons and have that huge, dumb choil)
CTS-XHP
D2
S90V
154CM (But I don't like axis locks! Siiiigh.)

I understand "getting that new knife itch". Most of my knives were purchased in the '70's and '80's. None were one hand opening or super steel. Then, I found this site. I had trouble deciding on which steels to buy i.e., 12c27, AUS 8. 154 cm, s30v, etc (notice the progression). So, I bought one of each (well, a couple of some) and this was just in the last 6 weeks. Hanging around this forum will give you the "getting that new knife itch".

s35vn: Sebenzas or Boker Pipsqueak Ti framelocks

M390: Benchmade MPR Ti/g10 framelock

CTS-XHP: Spyderco Techno Ti framelock

154CM: Hogue EX-01 Emerson Commander button/liner locks

ZDP-189: Spyderco has lots to choose from delica/endure/dragonfly2 stand out Lockbacks

I said this on another thread but.....

Hogue make some of the best Production Knives on the market IMO.

I have a OD Green Gmascus EX-01 Tanto 3.5" and it is plain awesome.

The button lock works flawlessly and the fit & finish is superb for a Production Folder.

I also agree with Sonny, I have a Three Sisters Forge Beast as well and its one of the absolute smoothest operating knives I own.

It's the perfect EDC size and even 5th pocket carries perfectly.

If you can find a Beast on the second hand market for a good price, don't even hesitate, just BUY IT!

Trust me you won't be sorry and they don't come up for sale all that often either.

But if the Beast is too pricey then the Hogue is a great choice.

The EX-04 is actually their newest model and I have also been looking to pick one up.

Love that Hogue went with Allen's Custom Modified Tanto style blade, like you can find on his Hyde and Mini Hyde Models.

But looking over both models more and more, I think I'm gonna go with the upswept model.

I have one word (since you've already gone through Spydies) Benchmade! :D owned a few, now enamored with the Mini Grip, totally worth it IMO and the price tag is right. Super quality and made in the U.S.A for the most part.

SO... what did you end up getting? Any photos to share?
