I'm going back and forth on which style sheath to make.

Either a folded-over sheath with a welt along the cutting edge only, or a fully sewn sheath with a "u" shaped welt that completely contours the blade...I like them both.

The knife itself is rather small with a 3/4" wide blade, and I like the traditional, vertical belt carry.

I'm wondering if some of you more experienced folk would have a practical, or functional reason to choose one over the other for this particular knife.

here is a picture of the almost completed knife:

Based on blade length as well as shape along with the fat in the middle handle shape I would build for security and thus a pouch sheath that would cover about half of the handle is what I would recommend

Thanks WR.

Given the length of the guard and the smallness of the handle behind the guard, could the type of pouch sheath that has a notch in the welt for the guard to lock into (i.e. no snap button) give adequate knife retention? Or should I just keep it simple and use two flaps joined by a snap button around the handle?

This knife is roughly the same shape as yours, including the extended guard. As you can see from the photo it will seat deeply enough in the sheath to eliminate the need for a retention strap. You may have to insert a wedge in the welt at the top to allow more room for the thick handle, but a single welt with the partial wedge if necessary is ALL you will need. No sense making a thick sheath just for exercise.

Chuck - that knife reminds me of your DVD. The sheath Paul showed was MUCH like the one you bent for the video - just not a butterfly IIRC. Great minds think alike.

By the way - BOTH look awesome.

Paul, that is a visually stunning combination.

Good to know that that format of knife can be successfully secured by that type of sheath.

The only thing that worries me about this type of sheath is the large amount of real estate out in the open..... lots of room for a beginner to goof up in:)

Not sure I grasp your meaning, there, Joe.???
