I'm having a problem registering for the Spyderco.com Forums

Someone pointed me toward a thread on Spyderco's forums (on the Spyderco website) about lanyard making, and I went there and found it's a cool forum with lots of cool people and good information.

The only problem is, when I tried to register, I submitted everything (checked for accuracy) and got the message "The administrator has banned your email address"!!

I have never gone on there before -- why would my email address be banned?

I also tried to register by giving a different (but valid) Yahoo email address -- no joy.

I tried clicking on the button that said "contact the administrator," which opened an email in Outlook Express addressed to "webmaster@spyderco.com" but two of those were bounced back to me as undeliverable, no such address!

Does anyone know why I would be having this problem joining Spyderco's discussion forum?

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Nope, the only problem that arises is that sometimes the Spam Filter your computerprogram uses classifies the mail the Forum send to activate the account as spam .

Check your spam and unwanted mails in your account. Probably the mail was stransferred to the spam map.

If you try to make a double account on the same emailadress the system denies it.

Just check your "unwanted" mail

Jeff -

Do you by any chance own a "Benchmade" knife? I'll bet those sneaky rascals at the Spyderco plant in Colorado hacked into the Benchmade computer and have the names of all registered Benchmade owners and ban them from their Spyderco web site. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Might try sending an email to the Spyderco forum admin and explain the problem.

I did send an email to webmaster@spyderco.com, which is the address that their own button provides -- it was sent back to me marked "undeliverable."

I don't have a spam filter set up on my computer. I would have thought that if anything, I'd get my email bounced back because their filter thought my email was spam. Dunno why it would, though.

Sal, are you out there? Can you help me out, here?

Jeffrey,

You cannot use a "free" email account. You can't use anything like Hotmail, Gmail, Yahoo! mail etc.

You have to use email from your ISP. The recently instituted this due to spammers.

Ghostrider informed me that they won't allow free email accounts to sign up, but I used my paid Peoplepc account! (I tried the free Yahoo account only after that one failed to work.)

I don't understand what is going on. Should I call Spyderco's customer service? Would they be able to help? What's the name of the woman who's the contact there, Kristi or something? Can she help? Does she read this?

Well, I have to go to work, so I won't be able to try again til late tonight or maybe tomorrow. Cheers.

Now i remember, Tazkristi was getting a lot of Spam on the forum. I believe they changed their policy for that reason.

Sorry, i hope you have access thru your ISP to an emailadres.

Ps The forum is a very nice place, even Benchmade knives can be discussed there ( although sparingly) :D

On top of the ban on the free e-mail accounts they also have a whole different protocol for getting on the Forum. From what I was told by another Forum member that all new applicants were going to be checked for other things as well as spam. I heard that Tazkristi has to pre-approve you to be on there. I'm not so sure how that works.

Now there is a guy who is a good friend of mine who goes by "Hannibal Lecter" here on the Forum who is a good friend to Tazkristi and he knows the score on this one much better than I do. Back 2 years ago when I got on the Spyderco.com Forum it was very easy. But now they scrutinize every applicant. But if you can get ahold of HB he can give you the straight scoop on it. You can probably just PM him here on this Forum>> good luck

Jeffrey,
Email me directly at khunter@spyderco.com and I'll get you taken care of. Please be sure to provide me with your PeoplePC email. Sorry about the issue with the "Webmaster" email. It's been corrected.

Kristi

Thanks, Kristi.

I'm looking forward to posting pics of some knife lanyards -- looks like I'm in good company based on what I've seen there already. :)

Email will be coming forthwith.

That is basically it. Taz attempts to verify that you are an actual registrant rather than just a spammer.

Spammers generally use free e-mail accounts, so those are generally out, and the Spyderco forum is far from the only place to require this. Taz hated to make the process more complicated, but it was getting to the point that she was spending an inordinate amount of time deleting spammer accounts and spam threads. I feel it necessary and advantageous to point out that her position as forum moderator is a volunteer position and in no way reflects her actual job duties, so minimizing the time she spends policing the forums is critical. The Spyderco Forums are provided and maintained by the good graces of Sal Glesser as a courtesy to the ELU; in this light, I see anything that can be done to ensure the health and longevity of the forums as a good thing. It might make the process of getting registered a bit more complicated initially, but it helps keep junk off of the forums and make it an overall better place to be for all of us.

Glad to have you aboard, peacefuljeffrey. You'll like it there. You may e-mail me privately if I can help you in any way.

BTW - I have no affiliation with Spyderco and am not in any way in a position to act as a formal mouthpiece for them. I am just a dedicated ELU trying to help keep everyone informed and happy. :D
