I read the other thread on the Treo's. I've been considering purchasing a PDA. I've looked at the Palm TX, Dell Axim and the HP IPAQ 2495. All have good reviews and some bad feedback.

For the past several years, I've simply used a small planner with refills and a reporter's notepad. Works ok, but there is simply no good way to organize all the contact numbers and dates. Hence the reason I've looked into the PDA idea.

Ironically, I signed into my Cingular Wireless account and learned I am eligable for a phone upgrade. Sure enough, here's a Treo 680 as well as the various Blackberry models plus phone/PDA combo's made by Nokia and Cingular.

I want something to organize my contact info, check email, surf the web and do some day-planning. Should I go with a phone/PDA combo, or keep the two seperate?

Thanks!

steve

When you get a combination of any kinds of equipment, you set yourself up for two problems. One, if one part malfunctions, it leaves you with a unit that may be crippled for the other function as well. Two, more likely, if one function upgrades, you can't get the latest version without upgrading the whole unit. That is, if a better PDA comes out, you're stuck with the one in your phone.

Separate units give you more flexibility.

I have always agreed with that when it comes to electronics like TV's with built in DVD players, or VHS/DVD combos. But when it comes to PDA's and phones, etc. I changed my mind a few years ago. I used to carry a Blackberry 7280, a Sony Clie PDA, and a Motorola Razr cellphone. Problem - having to drag along 3 separate pieces of equipment every time I went out the door. I switched to a Treo-650 and have never regretted it. (I know the Blackberry has the functionality of a PDA/phone, but not to the level I needed)

When I was shopping, it seemed the prices for the combo items were higher. That was true of phone/pda, gps/pda, and bicycle computer/gps dual-purpose gadgets. For less money you could buy two separate gadgets, each with higher specs (faster processor, more memory, etc.) than the combo offered.

That would be something to consider, and measure it against the value of the convenience.

Happy shopping,

ive had the 8125 pocket pc since last summer...ive loved it, helps me organize hw, contacts, addresses, notes, and tasks. They have an upgrade of it now i believe its the 8250. excellent phone once you learn your way around it

I hate combo devices. I have a Palm TX that I love, I can check my email, surf the Internet, make word and excel documents, watch movies, play games, listen to music and more. It has both BT and WiFi and plenty of memory, plus you get a higher resolution screen than some Treo. most, if not all of them come with a 320x240 or 320x320 screen. The TX is 320x480 and can be viewed in portrait mode and landscape mode (great for movies).

Thanks for the replies. I called Cingular today and got some quotes on plan rates for the Treo 680. I might give it a try.
