Ok so it's been a wile since I've bought a new knife so I decided to get a few this time. I sold 2 knifes to get some money together but now I don't know what to spend it on.
These are the knives I originally wanted to get:
Spyderco caly 3 carbon fiber (as a gentleman's knife)
Cold steel recon 1 ( as a beater)
Benchmade 940 Osborne (edc knife)

Now I'm wondering if instead of the cold steel recon 1 should I get a benchmade contego and hold off on the 940 for a wile. I know I want the knife as a beater but bench made replaces the blades of there knives for 25$. I'm not sure if this is a good idea or not. I just love the design of the knife. I do think I will be scared to beat on the knife and there is a big price difference between the knives. What would you guys think?

Get the knife you want and use the heck out of it. It's what I try to do I just don't abuse them, so another words I don't pry, use as screwdriver, throwing knife (unless it is one), etc and they hold up pretty well under the use their designed for. Chips in the blade, and light damage can get sharpened out if it comes down to it. Use the $25 blade replacement program if you really need too, but to be honest I haven't had a knife where I needed the blade replaced unless someone I knew took my knife and used it without my knowing (they decided to use it as a throwing knife and returned it with a bent up blade ).

Heck I used my Vic Recruit a simple swiss army knife that I had as a kid for years and abused it (just not the examples used above) and it still looks good, all it needs is a good blade sharpening and it worthy to be put back to use as an EDC. A lot of us knife enthusiasts baby our knives a bit too much in my opinion, I am guilty of that but I still try to use them every chance I get and definitely put them to work.

What Bob said. As long as your "beater knife" doesn't include abuse the Contego will handle it. I don't know what type budget you have, but a M390 blade steel version is available as an exclusive to one of the big internet seller's. The cost for this version is a little more than the standard, but the blue/black G-10 handles are very striking, and it is on my list to get. You may give the BM275 Adamas a look as it is a knife that can take a beating, and is built to do so. Good luck on the search!

I have a Recon 1 tanto and like it a lot, but if you're looking for a beater, I think I'd suggest a Code 4 instead. If I had it to do all over again, that's what I probably would have done for a couple of reasons. The Recon's blade coating will start to scrape off if you use it as a beater, and the grip texture is very aggressive and will indeed be a beater on your pocket. The grips on the Recon are very thick too, although I don't know about the Code 4; the blade thickness is comparable. Then again, some people will want the coated blade and heavily textured grips on a beater knife, so I guess you have to weigh the good and bad of those differences.

The Kershaw Lahar might be worthy of consideration. The blade may be thinner by a hair, and obviously a different lock, but it's VG10 instead of AUS8.
