Been searching for my first .45 for a while now and with some valuable advice from here, plenty of research on my own, renting a couple before and then a wonderful trip to the range today I now am in love.

The choice of .45 was a given because it is the caliber I am most comfortable with, and no disrespect for any other pistol caliber. The are all weak and anything 9mm and up is OK :)

I had the afternoon off and went to the range to rent a few to find out what I liked best. Tops on my list were Glock 21, Springfield XD, and Kimber Classic II.

The range was run by a very nice little lady. It was not busy at all and she let me try EVERY ONE of the .45 pistols there for rent. What a fun time and what a surprise to me!

Of all of them the Glock 30 was absolutely an extension of my body. Never would I have guessed that a subcompact double stack could work so well.

SIG 220 - very good
Glock 21 - good
Para Ordinance - very good
Springfield XD - very good
Glock 36 - not very good, felt wrong
H&K USP - not any better than the other very good ones
Kimber Classic - nothing extra special but still very good
Glock 30 - easily the best shooter in my hands (both, right, left)

All were shot at 10 yards with the same ammo - Blazer Brass. The G30 felt SO much better and really surprised me at how accurate it was and how quickly multiple shots could be placed. Closer in was no problem, farther out to 15 and 20 yards was fine (for me with a pistol :grumpy: ). Even single handedly on left and right was just easy and natural.

My choice is clear. One will be mine soon!

Chris,
You are indeed a wise man, trying out several models before making a decision on what to buy. The G-30 is without a doubt the most accurate point shooter that I have ever fired . During dry fire drills I will pick a target (light switch, door knob, etc.) close my eyes, draw and point, then open my eyes to see my sight picture. With the 30 the results are amazing.
Good choice and keep it stock ! (well maybe different sights)

I personally use .40 and own a Glock 23 compact. The full size was too large to carry for me, and the sub-compact wouldn't even let my pinky fit on the handle. But I do love my Glock, and have heard alot of Glock owners give nods to the Sprinfield XD (don't know if it comes in .45 like the Glock though).
The great thing about the Glock is its simplicity, I can field strip mine with my eyes closed in 2 seconds:thumbup:
If most LEOs trust their lives to Glocks, then its good enought for me. There are times I wished I had bought .45, but that gives me an excuse to buy another:D

Don't forget to thank in a tangible way the nice lady who gave you the opportunity to try out so many options and discover such a fit that wasn't even on your short-list initially.

They actually have a tip jar, and I dropped $5 in.

A fine choice

Personally I like the smaller grip on the G36 but everyone's hands are different & the one that is most comfortable for you is the 'best' one IMO...

Also; I dig the pup in your avatar - is that a male or female?

Thank you. That is Ella, short for Ella The Ellegant Rottweiller. Can you tell I have daughters? She is a real sweet-heart and a great family companion. I have never had a dog more able to "tune in" to people.

Now that you have decided on the firearm may I suggest an accessory?

Go to http://www.crimsontrace.com/default.asp?id=738 and check out the Crimson Trace Laser Grip. I love mine on the Glock and it is the most natural on/off -- almost like I don;t even have to think about it

You will want the LG-629. I got mine from Joe at www.gungoodies.com but there are many good sources.

Probably will want to check how it feels since it slightly changes the grip. For me it is an improvement!
