I got free shipping on my last order from NGK. I don't know if it has to do with price, but if it does, you would get free shipping on it as well, making that a damned good price.

I own two of this exact same model, the partially serrated tanto ones. My assessment of their quality is twofold.

The first one I bought has the BT2 coating. Quality wise, I can say this first one is the most impressive folder I´ve ever used. After a little bit of use, the axis lock was smoother than any other benchmades I had handled before. Its blade gets so loose as to dangle a few times in the air if I hold the unlocked knife horizontally, with the blade facing down. When it is open, there is absolutely no blade play in any direction whatsoever, the thing locks like a fixed blade. As usual, it came shaving sharp out of the box. The blade geometry appeals to me as well. I like tanto folders because you can use the tip for smaller, more precise cuts while holding the handle at a 45o angle. If you like them for the same reason, then you will find the tip of the HK to be particularly suitable for that, since the intersection angle is almost at the middle of the blade, creating a rather large (for a folder) cutting surface at the tip. The black coating, designed for extra protection against rust, shows much more wear than a satin finished blade would, but I still think the worn black blade looks better than a shiny satin one, so I had no problems there either. The rubberish black grip, although it wears the pockets of jeans pants rather rapidly, provides a firm grip even wet.

I liked this knife so much that for the first days I would find myself grinning like a fool while using it. I decided to buy another one, this time a satin finished one (you know, for variety :-). It was supposed to be a safe buy.

I was disappointed the moment I first opened the knife. The axis lock was not nearly as smooth as the first one I bought. The blade did not open as loosely either. And, worst of all, there is horizontal blade play. Don´t get me wrong, it was nothing blatant or hazardous or anything. It is just noticeable. You can hear a soft rattle if you hold the blade of the knife with a towel and shake it. Maybe I´m missing something, but no adjustments in the pivot screw were capable of eliminating these problems.

At use, my two HKs feel like two different knives from different brands, definately not like the sisters they are. The black one, the one I bought first, the beautiful sister, is probably my Best Knife Buy Ever. The satin finished one I bought afterwards, the ugly sister, was apparently not built to the same standards as the first one, as odd as it appeared to me. Taking into account lock smoothness and width of blade play, my satin finished HK behaves barely as well as a 154CM griptilian tanto, which cost me less than half of the price of an HK. Looking at it this way, the (second) HK definitely did not deliver enough for my money.

Good luck with yours!
