I never in my life have used a knife from anything other than Buck, Benchmade or Spyderco. The other day at a knife store i picked up a Kershaw knife. I was so shocked with that "torsion assist" that I almost dropped the knife. Now I am very upset as to how a knife like that can be legal, and a butterfly knife cannot. If you don't know what I am talking about, you should definetly give it a shot. All it takes is a little (very, very little) push and it pops open. Now that is a flick of the wirst, not what you can do with a butterfly knife.

Quijebo,

I know how you feel. I recently picked up a Benchmade model 720 with the Axis Lock. With the slightest squeeze of the lock, and a gentle "flip of the wrist" it is open. Faster than I can get any of my balis open. I cannot understand how these knives are legal but balisongs are not.

Sharing your frustration,

John

Unfortunately for us, balisongs are not going to become legal due to this apparent discrepancy. The only action that could possibly come about is the marginalization of these other knives as gravity knives.

The balisong's main problem is the existence of cheap knives that are functionally adequate. No rip-off company will be able to produce an Axis that actually works.

It's interesting to note that while butterfly knives were found to be distinct from gravity knives in Hawaii case law, statutes were passed regarding them specifically, supposedly due to the prevalence of carry among minors. I'm not clear on whether other areas were this precise in their legislation.
