I'm late to the party- what is the story on MULES?

I understand that they are released to try different steels, but I don't see much talk about them here and never see any for sale. Are they available to the general public or are they limited to certain factory testers, collector club, etc? Does a person have to wait for the next one and get in on a preorder? (be caller number 12...)
 
Anyone can buy them, no preorders, only purchased through SFO, they're mentioned on the spyderco forum ahead of time usually
 
If you go to spyderco's website and type mule in the search bar, you'll get a lot of good info.

Several mules are still available to buy there.

I Just picked up my first MUle in Elmax. Bought some g10 scales through Halpern Titanium and I am having glockcrazz here on BF make me a custom kydex sheath for it. I cant wait!
