im looking for a sweet new stockman to add to my ever growing knife collection. i know the buck 371 is a great option, so that one is on my list. but after that i really have no idea what im doing.

i know that some of the people here on BF have been carrying traditional knives for longer than i have lived. so please use your infinite wisdom and help me pick a few stockman to purchase.

as always thank you in advance.
allen.

Most bang for the buck is probably the Case amber bone CV 6318 pattern, 3-5/8" closed.
Good bone, good carbon steel, nice selection of blades, very pocketable, around $40.
For about $10-$15 more you can get the Queen #9 in amber carved stag bone and D2 steel.
Better looking bone, better steel (although harder to sharpen), slightly larger at 4" closed.
You can't go wrong with either one, or better yet, GET BOTH!!

all hood allen: Without having any sense of your price range or other preferences (size, handle materials, rounded or squared bolsters), I'd say definitely check out a newly made Case medium stockman in cv steel. You can choose from their bomb-proof yellow delrin, or chestnut bone or amber bone. Good luck and let us know what you choose please.

either the older "3 eye" eye brand from 70s or 80s or the cuban stock from gec. these are pricey but will make you very happy in the long run. if wanting an entry level stock find one of the delrin cold steel carbon 5 that have been discontinued. although the c.s. is not nearly as handsome the cutting quality is still up there in the top 10%.

all of the case amber bone series look sweet. the queen is pretty nice too but the D2 is a turn off.

honestly i am pretty open to all knives, i would like them to stay under $100. but the case stock man is really nice. i added it to my list.

case 079 is in.
thanks for the help. keep it coming.

something else to consider re: the case medium stockman.
the 62018 has a spey blade. the 62032 substitutes a pen blade for the spey blade. it may or may not matter to you.

First questions would be what is your price range, what size, do you like carbon steel?

I mean there are a lot of choices out there. You can troll eBay and find a nice USA Schrade 8OT or 881 if you want a big carbon worker. If you want something dressier, you could go Moore Maker. If you prefer stainless, Canal Street has some very nice wood and stag stockmen. There are just so many choices.

I was much impressed by the quality of a recent Boker stockman. $45.

My favorite Case is the medium stockman, pattern 6318, which offers a slender design and rounded bolster ends. Available in CV steel and amber bone for $45.

And of course I have an admiration of the Schrade Old Timer 34OT Middleman. Should be able to pick up an original USA model in unused condition for $45 or less.

Good Luck deciding!

At work I carry a 3 1/4" Hen & Rooster in stag. In my time off, a 4" Boker in delrin. Both are carbon steel. I like the looks of the Case with the pen in place of a spey. It's on my short list.

Upon my return to traditional knives I started EDC of a Hen & Rooster medium stockman model 403DS, 3 3/5", in stag.

I carried it off and on since its purchase five years ago and full time now. Purchase price in 2005 was $50.

Fit and finish are extremely nice and the knife is serving me well.

A Queen #9 is on my wishlist... Got a nice old Ka-Bar stockman in my pocket now, in carbon steel & jigged delrin.

I agree with Bob W on the Böker Stockman, fine value and decent quality.

Why not try a Böker Whittler as well? Another good tri-bladed knife. Just got one today in a new scale: Green Washboard Bone, splendid!

sigh... i so miss my boker whittler :( i'm always looking to replace it... one day...

Case Medium stockman CV in Chestnut bone.

I have one in amber and love that knife. I can't wait to be able to afford one in chestnut or find a good deal on one.

The suggestion of the Schrade 881 was a good one too. That is my EDC on most days but the Case medium stockman in CV is a very close second. But the 881 is harder to find in good shape. I have been lucky and found three on the bay for cheap.

But for current production, the Case is very nice. Good size, easy to carry, CV blades will get screaming sharp if you know what you are doing, and they hold an edge well.

There sure have been a lot of "Recommendation" requests lately, especially for stockmen.
Maybe someone with experience should make a blank chart on a thread and we all could just fill in the lines with a stockmans details. Then we just first refer a new questioner to the chart....

I would only have to do two if the chart didn't split on scale types......ha
