Im making a knife for the 1st time need some info

Well i work with a farrier in the summer and this past summer i decided to try my hand at making a couple of knives, so i used what was readily available to me and started with used rasps, i cut them out in the basic shapes i wanted. As of yet that is as far as i ve gotten due to time to work on them, but this weekend im getting my boss' forge and anvil to try and finish them up any tips on sharpening, polishing, setting the angles and any other help you may think is necessary for a Newbie. Also need ideas for the handles and sheaths.
