Hello Sirs and Ma'ams,

I think it's time to move on to another phase of my life and I am off to move to San Francisco. It is near the SF State area... I was wondering (and my parents think I am insane) that I want to continue my Kalu training.. now I have done searches and have a link to the FMA directory.. but there's something searches can't get you - that's recommendations.. I was hoping some kind souls can lead me to a good school since I trust you forumites more than anyone

My main interest is in Kali, kickboxing, and 'modern knife fighting' (ofcourse) I have had say 6 months training in Kali and kickboxing (both american & some mui tai) here in PA, and want to continue that.

If someone can lead me to a nearby school I woudl apprecaite that.. thanks

Sniperboy, some of Hock Hochheim's folks and one of the Sayoc guros are around in Oakland. Fairtex Academy at Fairtex.com comes highly regarded for Muay Thai. Guy Chase of the JKD vids has an academy in the city but haven't tried it out.

email me for a sec, if you have the time.

Susan,

Please be careful, your passion is really a bad thing to have in California. California is not Pennsylvania, knife-wise. Different world entirely.

Yes Sir Don, I realize entirely about the drawbacks of being in CA. I think I have been spoiled by PA.. neverthe less.. I have to keep up my failing figure so it's best I practice =). thanks for the info if anyone else hasa more please tell me.. Is there a brazilian jiu jitsu school in the area?

Ralph and Carley Gracie have schools in the city as well. My friends have no complaints with either of them.

I can't make any recommendations but I can tell you that you won't have any trouble at all finding a school. The Bay Area is a mecca for FMAs, even more so than the place where I live, Los Angeles. And L.A. is no slouch either.

Yup, SF shouldn't be a problem w/locating a good place to train...Might I suggest you look into Silat, I believe Joe Siregar is someplace in SF and from what I remember, all the PKT players I knew really liked his system--he's Batak, from Indonesia--very intense, from what I heard. He might be difficult to find, since he's kinda underground, but just remember the name...do consider Silat in general, though.

Some good folks to know in Cali would be the "backyard" guys of Punong Guro Edgar Sulite's Lameco Eskrima, the Sulite Orehenal Group--they should know of awesome places to train...they're a hardcore Pinoy crew, and tight-knit, with a line into the Eskrima underground...they will most definitely have a clue. Touch base with them, they will steer you in the right direction.

Another person you might drop a line to (and I'm only telling you this coz I checked your site and found out you're a sista) that might have a clue is my ex, who is quite the Balisong player herself, her background being in Pananandata Marinas...she might know of folks, and just cool things in Cali in general.

here's her site, ya might really dig her:

Do visit the "No Nonsense site"--awesome info in general, and a truly invaluable resource, IMHO. Check out their links!

I truly wish you all the best, and have a blast in SF...stay safe, ya hear?

Don, and sniperboy.
Why is it bad to have this passion for knives and the corresponding arts a bad thing in California and not bad in Pennsylvania? I have heard other hints of such a thing but I though Cali was pretty knife friendly as state governments go? Forgive my ignorance but I am really curious. Thanks.

justin, CA is folder friendlier but has a tradition of setting restrictive laws and other states refer to them as the standard. Not just guns and knives but other issues like land and language. Each city, school has its' own laws on blades.

CA is folder friendly right at this moment. Pending changes in the legislature (see the current issue of Blade) again attack folders without a positive detent to prevent inertial openings.

While this might be a nice feature for some of the liner locks on the market, I'd hate to see it become a requirement...

That's easy Justin. SnipahBoy is an avid BaliSong Collector. Carrying one in California is about the same as carrying a Microtech Nemesis.

Some say that the BaliSong is legal to collect and own in California, however, very few dealers will stock them in California due to pressure from Law Enforcement OR, from pressure that they might be illegal for sale there.

That's all.

Oh okay that makes sense. I don't think I have EVER heard of that knife being socially acceptable in any states. I thought it had something to do with the Filipino Martial arts. Thanks for clearing that up Don.
