So recently I attended my first hammer in hosted by Dan Graves ( http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...n-oct-1-all-welcome-FREE?highlight=shreveport ) While there I learned SOOOOOO much. Tips and tricks for the grinder, fluted handles, inlays, pommel button tricks, and sooo much more!!! The second day there I saw the forge and power hammer were not being used and kinda asked Dan if i could have a small piece of 1080 to heat up and hit a few times to see how it feels. He looked at me like I was crazy and said "NO! but you can do something with it! What you want to do make a knife? stretch out a bar for a big bowie or something?" And so with some guidance and butter flys in my stomach I lost my forging virginity!!!

I really really really owe a HUGE thanks to Dan for a very fun weekend!!!

Nice!!!! A C Richards wouldn't let me use his 100# Bradley Hammer or his Press either... :grumpy:
Said I had to learn on the anvil first too....
What's with these guys?

I imagine the bug has hit you then? Ready to buy one(or three) anvil(s)??? :D:D:D

Nice! There's nothing like a hammer in, or going to another maker's shop to help with the learning curve!

I had a blast too William. I enjoyed meeting you and everybody else and seeing old friends too. Hope to see you there again next year.

William--what did the kiddos say when they saw the pics and your handiwork? It was a blast this weekend--enjoyed meeting you (you too, Darrin)

Cool! You're gonna be busy with that anvil from now on!! I need to get a forge set up and do some hammering in addition to my stock removal, but I don't know how well it would go over in my neighborhood......

Glad you had a good time!

I actually got to use his 50lb power hammer also and I literally walked out of there feeling like I knew 2x as much as I did walking in! Alot of the other makers had alot of good info and tips as well! Gonna start looking for a decent used anvil and getting pieces for a forge!

Was very nice to meet you and everyone. Btw forgot to ask but how did you finish your micarta on those knives you brought to show? Im not 100% happy with my micarta finishes.

They thought I was gonna be in a shop like mine just grinding metal like I do but with other guys. Those pics blew their mind lol. Of course I was way more excited then they will ever be but the bug bite me. Planning now where to put my forge and anvil and calling some oilfield buddies to look for scrap pipe big enough for me to use for a forge then Ill attempt to piece one together.

Hello William,
I was going to try to make it to that hammer in but just couldn't get away. Banging on an anvil is a ton of fun. I am not sure if you would be interested and I am a few hours away but if you have trouble finding an anvil I do have a good size chunk of rail road that can be used as one for awhile until you find a proper one. I also might (not sure if its still there) have a piece of steel that could be used as a post anvil. I love forging so much I want everyone to try it. I also have a freon tank that is itching to be a forge. Let me know if your interested.
Dan
