Well it's nothing all that special but I sanded off the coating below the grind on my BK2. Didn't take too terribly long. Used some sandpaper wrapped around a file so I could hold it perfectly flat against the grind.

It's not perfect but I didn't feel like doing a high polish on a knife I'm just going to beat up and scratch anyway. I used 100 grit sandpaper and it only took a couple hours or so by hand. Makes me want to upgrade from the inner tuber stretched over the grivory scales. Now I just need to finish the kydex sheath for it.

I like that look on the BK2.
after I stripped mine and forced a patina, I ended up sanding back the grind as you did...

Was trying to do the opposite effect on my BK9 but I got to this point and could tell I wasn't going to like it. So the BK9 is going to get fully stripped.

I was hoping I'd be able to sand down the stamps and leave the black in them but they're not perfectly flat so some parts are being a bear to sand and get good definition. I was going to strip my MK1 and USMC F/U since I'm doing some mods that are going to take the finish off in some spots and don't want them to look fugly, so I'll pick up some paint stripper tomorrow. I also gotta swing by the PO tomorrow and send out those giveaway prizes.

Looks really good from the pics. I would be proud of it if it were mine.

Glad you didn't try that sort of strip with the new coating. Might have the possiblity of looking extra horrid.

But what do I know?

If you don't want to buy micarta ,try stippling. You can look at my BK2 ,grip is fantastic, you don't have to worry about it. And it look great.

Yeah, I'm thinking some sort of stippling on the front portion of the handle but leave the back smooth for a chopping grip.

I wasn't planning on it originally but the BK9 gets smudges and fingerprints on it by just looking at it, so I think I'm gonna try a patina. The paint stripper is working it's magic on my UMSC and Navy MK1 but if I can help it I'm not going to sand those. I like the raw look they have just underneath the finish.

Woody that stippling job looks awesome!

I've thought about stripping some of mine but like the worn look of the coating. Plus rust protection :)

Love the raw finish on the bevel though. Looks great!

Truth be told, I wish I'd stuck with the worn look I had going on the BK9, but what's done is done. However I'm pretty happy with how my USMC turned out.

I didn't so a perfect job trimming the top guard or cleaning it up after, but I can live with it. And it seems to fit in with the weathered look of the knife. Now I need to bend some kydex for it.

The title of this thread is misleading but I'm glad. Nice looking 9.

It was originally just about the BK2. But when I was done with it I was still bored so I worked on some other knives and started posting them too, so I changed the title. I have a MK1 I'm working on too.

has anyone ever made the bk2 into an ffg by grinding on it?

Yes. It takes a long time and you'll grind off the markings on the blade but it has been done. Do a search for it and you should find it.

After I get off work tonight I'm heading up to my old home town Oregon to test for a job and I'll be crashing at my dad's house with a nice workshop. So hopefully I can knock out the pommel reduction on the MK1 and maybe between when I get back and when I leave on my next trip I'll be able to finish the BK9.

If you don't mind, is there an advantage to stripping the coating off? Does it have any effect on use or is it purely aesthetic?
