hes a captain in the marines out in San diego right now.. im taking road trip out there.... i want to get him a nice gift... and khuk comes to mind.. hes the typical gung-ho type that likes violence yet appreciates quality and heavy duty.. you know the finer things in life ;)

Im interested in getting him a multipurpose knife. Fighting yet at the same time a work horse.

hes an artillery officer.. i need a good recomendation...

im considering the following:

WWII (work horse and fighting knife combo)
Sirupati (weapon like yet still has lifetime warrantee)
BAS (similar reason to the WWII)
15-18 inch AK (work horse and overall popularity and heavy duty)
GS (bcs of this thread where Pala states that the ghurkas should use this one instead of the BAS http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=239313&perpage=20&pagenumber=3)

but im open to other recomendations

hes about 5'11 and maybe 170-180 pounds and is no stranger to knives

please advise thnx
(especially from those that have served or are serving in our armed forces)
bill i know you are away right now.. but your advice would be greatly appreciated on this one too :)

I would think that a WWII, BAS, or smaller AK (15-18") would be an ideal khukuri for what you need.

I've found the smaller sirus (less than 20") a little light for chopping. Great as a weapon.

I'd probably go with the WWII. The 18" if you want mass.

bummer, dude...just missed the king of all sales...

Anyway, start with something more "first-timer" friendly.

15" BAS, AK or Sirupati
or at most, a 16.5" WWII

Larger becomes more limiting and a first-timer should be able to get the most use as possible out of their first khuk - especially when it's given as a gift.

There's no shame in a 12" AK, Sirupati or Pen Knife.

Think like Sarge - then you'll know what to get.

:D

Stef, I think he would be thrilled with anyone of the khuks. Just don't tell a Marine that you "didn't get him the big one, because it would be too unwieldy." :D

well in my thread that asks the forumners about thier fav khuk.. many of them said the 18 inch WWII bcs it was the best combo of weapon and tool.

but im worried that it will be too cumbersome on his gear... my chiruwa is 16.5 and its a bit cumbersome and im about his size....

i know how important it is to have weight efficient gear on when you are humping a rhuk sack around...

Then the 16.5 WWII is the next size down.

After that, you are looking at the 15"AK or BAS.

The khuks vary a lot so the length and model does put the carry weight in persective.

So choose the khuk for the largest managable size and then have Uncle Bill find you the lightest one he has.

I'd ask Uncle Bill if he had a 20-21 oz BAS or 15"AK.

Small enough for the pack and ok for some light choppin'.

at the Cantina, is a 12 inch knife considered a "smaller" one.

I could not be happier with the 12 inch AK I have, and I have more opportunities to carry it(as oppposed to the 15 in AK) now that the weather is warmer and a big blade is conspicuous.

A friend is a treasured possession. Any gift is just icing on the cake.

I posted in that thread and voted for the 18" WW2.

I have to tell you if I was going into service again I would take something lighter.

That is all I can say because I haven't tested all the other possible models yet.

But I must say that my 15" BAS feels an inch to light and short many a time and I am sure I could carry something a bit heavier in service. But you will manage with it, sure.

I have also seen many people here on this forum recommend the 18" Gelbu Special as a service weapon.

Eiker...

ahh thanx for that link...

so basically you say that the WWII 18 inch is too heavy yet the 15 AK is too light.

so it comes down to the 16.5 WWII or the GS (depending on whether the 18 inch es is too long to hang on your leg and run and climb with)

im very concerned about the length of the blade. How do yo feel about the 18 inch long blades hanging on your leg? too long?

please advise

I've belt-carried my YCS (17.5") and it's "tolerable". Of course, I belt-carried my BAS as well at that wasn't necessarily better/easier.

If you want true portability and belt-carriability (did I make up a word? ) then go for a 12" AK. Nice amount of heft to chop, smaller size, easy to belt carry.

That said, I still think a Pen Knife would be more fun. (get kinda preachy now, ain't I...?)

Fr. Dan :p

If what you want is something that will always stay strapped to a pack, then get a BAS or 15" AK.

Anything larger is really too much to pack (long term) except for the most pious among us. ;)

I forgot about the GS special. I really want to snag one down the road. UB commented that Pala thinks the GS should be standard issue for Gurhka troops instead of what they have now. Since he served in with the Gurhkas, he ought to know. And...it's a beautiful blade.

16.5 WW2 is still the king of grab it when you don't know what you'll need it for, followed by the 18" WW2. 17 inch or 18 inch ? if they are light. An ounce an inch ( or close to it is my standard ) up to an ounce and a quarter an inch. Much heavier and lose lose speed. ANY 18" 20 to 24 +/- ounce khuk will do fine.

rusty

do you think that 18 inch blade is too long to strap on your leg on a long day where you are walking//running etc...

i think im leaning towards the GS or WWII if 18 inches is fine length to hang on the belt
or
the WWII if 16.5 is good to hang on the belt

Bill prefers the WWII
Pala prefers the GS

so i trust those two a lot. so it basically comes down to length
how much does a GS weigh? i looked it up and it didnt say

Snarlin Stef

Yes, I think the 18" WW2 is heavier than necessary for the military.

I think no khukuri goes on your tigh or hip in a highly active service. They will get in the way in both places and remind you of their presence for every step you take.
I always strap my 15" BAS on the backpack even just for relaxed hiking.

If Uncle Bill and Pala say WW2 and GS then listen to them. I haven't held the GS, but a longer reach seems like a good idea in a fight. I think Uncle Bill can dig out a light GS from his stockpile if you ask him.

For weight of the GS look at this thread on the bottom of page 2:
