It's such a terrible investment. There used to be a time 15-20 years ago when you got in a pinch & needed to make a few bucks, you'd get back 3/4 what you put into it. This applies to the big names too, like Busse, CRK, Hinderer & Strider. You'd be lucky to get half of what you paid for any of them these days, untouched, no cut no carry. Nothing holds its value anymore. They're worse than buying a new car & losing half the value driving it off the lot. I don't care about the new steels anymore or new designs. I'm just done. I have enough knives to last 100 lifetimes. I'm just going to keep what I have instead of practically giving them away. I'd rather give them away to my family when I die. Sorry to be a bummer but I'm just done with it all. I had a good run. 2002-2025. Rant over

Your mistake was looking at it as an investment. (Or, more accurately, a financial one.)

It's more rewarding to give them away, but there have been some I have sold for a loss, and several I have sold for a profit. In general, I still have most of them because I like them. That's an investment in my enjoyment.

Buying a knife for an investment is a recipe for disaster.

I’d be happy if everyone who buys simply to resell quit the hobby. It would make it easier for the people who actually want the knives to enjoy to get them

Not all knives lose value, but the ones that don't are hard to get and they may not always coincide with your aesthetic preferences. Not losing money takes perseverance, pickiness, and luck. Just be more selective and you won't be disappointed. Or just accept that you are spending money purely for your own gratification.

Knives ARE a terrible investment, so I don’t buy them for the investment factor. What I do buy them for, is to enjoy them as everyday work and weekend camp tools.

Knives have increased dramatically in price, over the last few years. I can see how that would affect someone just getting into the hobby. On the other side of that coin, guns and ammo haven’t been this cheap in a long time.

Salad days for 2A stuff, and knives cost a fortune. Save this post for future reference, because it’s true.

Hang in there champ, don’t give up on the hobby just yet…

In my opinion it’s the people who think knives are an investment that drove the prices up. Just think flippers, They want to make a killing and do until it doesn’t. I don’t buy knives because it’s a wise decision I buy them to use and enjoy them. It’s kinda like gambling if you’re in it for the money, don’t bet what you can’t afford to lose or buy what you can’t get a return on.

I've had quite a few knives, I could have sold at a considerably higher price than I paid .

But , considering inflation , costs , time/effort and heartache associated with selling , I don't considered knives as a good long term "investment " .

Plus , if I sold my best/ most valuable knives , I would surely miss them. Some would be very difficult / costly to replace . 🤷‍♂️

I’ve thought about putting a few up for sale because of the current seller’s market in the knife world. But then I thought to myself, it would be difficult to replace, should I happen to want one again. So that usually stops my seller’s remorse before I even get there.

I can relate as I usually go on more of a buying spree than a selling spree. Lately as some of my taste and need has changed I have attempted to sell a few here and there only to find that the secondary knife market is rough right now especially for users you want to sell. I’m not hoping to make a profit or even recover all of my money but it’s crazy to find that you can’t recover much of the initial investment at all in the current economy. Hopefully that will change soon as I have the itch to buy some more but was hoping to sell a few to buy a few.
