Well, I ordered a 4 step Arkansas hone, and a 8"x3" fine and extra fine dia-sharps. I edc a native and it had some little small nicks in the blade and it needed a touch up. So, instead of using the 30 or 40 degress on my sharpmaker I put the fine and then extra fine on the bottom and touched it up free-hand. A quick strop afterwards and it's now as sharp as it's ever been. I really like this. I've heard a bunch of people say that sharpening on the sharpmaker is relaxing, but I only find free hand to be realxing. I know it's not a huge accomplishment, but it's definetly a start.

Free hand sharpening is very relaxing and rewarding, there is nothing to help you so you must see, hear, and feel your way to sharpness. Let the DMT's break-in and keep them clean, the X-fine can clog up fast.

I love to hit my stones freehand. Sense of accomplishment and can be very relaxing. Nothing like sitting down with some music or tv/move and working on some knives.
