HEY !

How many of you remember what happened with the Buck Sawby 531 ??

As I remember, Buck decided not to release that knife to the general public because of liability concerns of guess what: THE LOCK DESIGN !! As the story goes, if someone stupid tried to use it as a hammer and the LOCK failed, they might get cut and Buck might get sued ??

Turns out (most) of the Sawby 531's became the first Buck Collector "Club Knife"...IE 1 of XXX that wasn't held back by the company or a rep.

WOW. Here we are 14 - 15 years later with another knife, the 172 Buck/Mayo TNT that can't handle a "whack" test on a wood table??

Sounds like a bad RE-RUN to me.

A beautiful knife for sure and I hope they can iron out the problems with it. Sure glad I didn't order one. (yet)

Hope this doesn't give you guys at corporate nightmares.

My gut feeling is Buck will iron out the problems. A number of people, like me, are very satisfied with our knives. The framelock is a pretty established design and it should not be hard to get it together.

The whack test has nothing to do with lock strength, and it should go away.

A frame lock is very tough to manufacturer, and I believe this is Buck's first attempt, and my example is very well done.

As the manufacturing progresses, Buck will refine the design and engineering.

The Buck/Mayo wont pass a spine whack ???
Guess all those dents in my table are just an illussion :D Seriously I have more faith in the lock than I do in the table ;) Guess I just got a lucky good one.

I've had mine for a little over a month or so and it gets better everytime out. There's really not a thing wrong with it. Lockup is very secure, fits real nicely behind the hip inside the waistband (or clipped in the rear pocket) and is exceptionally smooth.

Mine works perfectly..................every time!

I wonder, did you buy one of these knives and have a problem?

or is this just a rumor that you are perpetuating?

I'm with you Tom.

Thanks to my friend Cory, I can say the same thing as you. The blade disengagement has become easier with time, the lock is strong as an ox and the edge is still absolutely scary sharp even after pretty hard use for the last month and a half.

Buck truly has a winner here. The spine wack test?? I still don't see how that is relevent. If the lock is good and strong and holds under great pressure, and mine does, what is the difference? I haven't wacked mine so I don't know if it holds or not and I probably never will. It might just put unnecessary scratches in the handle. Oh well.

From what I have read and heard from other users, there are a whole lot more really positive experiences then negative. I don't think I have seen any other production knife do any better.

One thing I haven't heard a comment on at all is how the blade just gets sucked back into the handle when being closed. I really like that..

I just got one and the lock up was extremely secure. I also don't see the point in the spine whack test. I'm not going to use the back of the blade as a hammer! I think a lock should be secure but you shouldn't put that much pressure on any lock.

Unfortunately I had to ship mine back to Buck. The blade was out of alignment enough so that it almost rubbed against the side opposite the lock. I do love this knife, hope it comes home soon!

I got mine recently and am pleased with the workmanship and finish. The blade is centered, very sharp and ground evenly, and the knife is a perfect size for in-pocket carry. The lockup is secure (mine is 50%) and yes, it is stiff to disengage, but this is a good thing in my opinion. I wish the scale opposite the lock would have a slightly larger cutout to allow a better purchase on the lock to facilitate disengaging, however. Minor quibble.
The thing that bothers me the most about this knife is the very sharp corner exposed in the handle when the lock is engaged. I find this to be very annoying; this corner should be radiused to avoid this problem. I know, all it takes is a pass with a file to break the sharp edge, but this is something that Buck should be doing. For me, this is the one aspect that keeps this knife from being an outstanding user.

I got to play with one today. Wow! I can't believe how thin it is. Beautiful. Only thing I didn't like was the "hilt". There's two corners sticking out where my thumb goes. I like back being flush with the back of the blade when open and having the grooves for grip. Even so, very nice knife.

i ordered three......one for me and two for friends...... we had no idea which was which as the boxes were factory sealed...the one i chose was perfect.....one of the other ones was perfect and the third had to have its pivot screw tightened and then it was perfect.....

all three are very well done with very smooth actions, bank vault like lockup, nicely radiused scales, blades perfectly centered, and sharp as hell blades.....i didnt do the spine whack off thing as it tells me nothing and gives the blade a vector force for which the blade/knife was not designed....nuff said on that and i have never understood why people continue to do that to their knives but its their knife and they can do to it what they wish....

i have handled a custom mayo folder or two;) and can compare these easily with the numerous ones i have in my collection as well as the dozens i have handled in other people's collections.....buck has done an outstanding job on these.....as far as custom collaborations go this is about as good as it gets in my humble opinion

I agree with all of the preceding under one stipulation: That you do more collaborations with Tom!:D

(Hint- Bigger is better)

These knives are starting to flow now as the "dial in techniques" have gotten worked out.

I have carried one since the beginning and just love it.

Omrie, we do not make any changes to this knife without Tom's approval, that is the spirit of the collaboration. Will keep your feedback in mind when going for the next one...

as to bigger or smaller...I have heard feedback asking for both. We'll see...

As to JKI's comment on the exposed point on the handle when the lock engages, i had not heard that before. As I said I have carried this knife from the beginning and never noticed that as a problem, anyone else see that as an issue? Does it just need to have the corner broke a little?

CJ, I can see what he is talking about, however I don't see it as a big problem with my knife. The only way it is an issue is if I grip the knife and rub my finger towards the blade. When I do that, it does appear to be a little on the pointy side. I think rounding it a little would satisfy anyone who objected to it.
It just doesn't bother me.

Agreed. The current Buck/Mayo is a nice knife, but it would be too hard to use if it were any smaller.

Like any thing else small bugs need to get worked out when something new is added to an already Awesome lineup!
IM sure Buck Knives has spent Big$$$$ working with Mr.Mayo developing a production version of the already Popular TNT...which in it self is no easy task!
they have IMHO The Best customer service, if there is any problem no matter how small you think it is they will do you right! i can honestly say the Buck/Mayo that i have is by far the Best production folder that i use on a daily basis, it actually made my custom Mayo a safe queen:D
my hats off to Mr.Mayo and the fine people Buck Knives!

Just acquired two from a friend in Miami........both were perfect in every way.........thanks guys! :)

I have just finished redoing my Buck-Mayo. No more spine hump and tip up carry. Made a new clip to ride like the sebenza(down the lock)and added just one new thread for a #56 screw. I changed and put a longer screw on last torx at the back of the handle to hold the clip. I think knife looks perfect now(to me ,anyway). Just love it!!:footinmou :D :)
