Yep, that's right, I'm closing her down. Shutting the doors. Turning her off. It's been fun but...

I just can't use this UBB software anymore.

So, tomorrow night or Saturday, I'm going to close down the forums, import the threads and members, and switch over to some shiny new software. Expect a few hours of downtime while I work out the kinks, but we should be up and running after only a few hours of work.

You'll be able to look forward to such novel things as...
  • Fast searches!
  • More Forums - and subforums!
  • Forum Styles (I just have to create them...)
  • User editable profiles - with lots of new fields!
  • New smilies!
  • Profile Avatars! (50x50 pictures of yourself, under your profile name)
  • Event calendars!
  • Thread rating!
  • Editing the title of your thread!

We'll also be implementing new levels of membership, like BladeForums.com Premium Member, who will be able to create their own, in thread, polls, have secure private messaging, buddy lists, ignore lists (ignore the members you don't want to read!), the ability to upload pictures to their threads, and much more! Oh yeah, and for those who have been following the For Sale Forum threads, Premium members will be able to post items for sale when after we make the switchover.

We'll also have neat features like custom user titles, so Walt Welch will finally be a true Whacko.

It's pretty cool. I'm stoked. It'll be fun.

Oh Boy, here we go!

How about a Bowie Knife forum? Big American style blades & techniques? Not a popular choice for EDC but still a big chunk of knife history.


How about a forum discussing actual self defense cases using knives, like American Rifleman does every month with guns? Do juries look at knife carriers as weird-ohs, while upstanding citizens carry pistols with permits?

Ethnic Fighting Systems. How do Sicilians with stilettos fare against Finns with pukkos, Gitanos with navajas, bikers with buck knives?

Tools. SAK or Multipliers?

Kitchen knives, why are they different?

Knives in the Knews, media, films, culture.

So tell me Spark, what exactly are these new level of memberships all about and how does one go about reaching these higher levels of membership?

This new software sounds like it's going be a great improvement, I just hope we are not going to be setting up some sort of caste system.

Ok, the subject line DID scare me ... momentarily. A place like this is just TOO COOL to be shut down!

Anyway, how do I get a "premium" membership? Is it going to be the $20 a year subscription rate that seems to be the consensus?
