I'm taking the coating off of my bk5 tonight , starting with a paint stripper , then going to sand paper . I'm going to finish it up with a paracord wrapped handle .

Any pointers or suggestion would be great ....

Don't have any suggestions, but I would love to see a picture when you are done. Sounds pretty neat:)

I can highly reccomend the Jasco brand epoxy and paint remover. I picked it up at Home Depot for a few bucks. Let it sit on there about 15 minutes, then I used a flat Xacto blade to peel most of the coating off. Also, use wet/dry sandpaper with WD40, it really puts a smooth finish on the blade.
I removed the coating from 2 Swamp Rat knives, and a TOPS Anaconda. These had very thick tough coatings, so it took about 2 hours each to get a finish I was happy with. Good luck! It's a fun project. Oh yeah, wear rubber gloves when using the stripper. I accidentaly touched the coated blade on my leg, and it burned like a mother! I washed it quick, but it still left some blisters!

Ed, I started a thread called "Nekkid Recon Scout" last summer. It has instructions and links.
Bruce Evans (beknives) has a hand sanding tutorial on his website

Basically start with the stripper (paint) ;) use 320 grit wet/dry and work your way up to 800. I used WD40 with the sand paper...Bruce uses baby oil and some others Windex.
Use a sanding block, so you don't 'soften' the grinds. I alternated between a squared block of wood and a chunk of 10 oz leather.
Take your time & good luck.

Found 'em :D
