Big surprise right? I fired up the forge last night and was waiting for it to come up to temp. I decided to run one of my blades through a few thermal cycles so I slid it in checked the temp (800). I started picking up the mess I had made earlier around the shop. Checked temp again (900) Normally it only takes 10-15 minutes to come up to temp, 30-45 minutes had passed and it was stalling out at 1100.

I had, had a long day so I am blaming that for my lameness! I checked the knife and it was way past critical (Based on color) I pulled it out, checked the temp again and realized it was still on F-ing Celsius... I shut down the forge and had a beer.

A year or so ago I moved my forge from it's regular location, fired it up, and to my suprise soon found out I had put it under a fire sprinkler head. Fortunately it was the only one that popped.

Haha, oh, I mean sorry. That sucks. That's as bad as when i was building a workbench at my fathers, I had measured the spot on a previous day and wrote everything down. Went and bought all the lumber, grabbed my tape measure an started marking the wood. Got to where I needed to put it in place, picked it, moved it over and it was too big! I went crazy double checking evrything 'til I realized my tape I took the measurements with was a standard and the tape I was using that day was in 10th's of feet!

Oh well, life goes on...not like its brain science or rocket surgery...

Don't feel too bad. NASA engineers did the same thing.....with a Mars probe they crashed.

Thanks everyone for trying to make me feel better,

Patrice - were you saying instead of Beer is should be Beers :D living in Utah most of the beer is as they say "like having sex in a canoe" 3.2% (luckily no metric conversion needed for that)
Xander - I am not sure I have even seen a 10th's of a foot tape measure, and don't need one in my life obviously.
KBamhi - that sucks, bet that was a surprise, you are very lucky one one dumped!
Stacy - your post made me feel much better, pretty low stakes considering what could have happened.

I grew up during the days that the US wanted to keep up with the rest of the world and they tried to convert us over to the Metric system. Unfortunately the teachers weren't able to make the change (that is my theory anyway!) I am married to a hot European lass and she has me convinced that Metric is superior, Unfortunately I am like those teachers!

That is FUGLY.

Poor heat treatment caused failure a few millions miles from home? Any chance you have a link? I googled to no avail.

Shotgunner, He was referring to the failure to convert meters to feet. They had there propulsion force in newtons and their distance in feet, which caused the rover to hit the surface much much faster than anticipated.

I am sorry to hear that Ryan. I am pretty sure the water around here has a higher alcohol content than your beer. ;)

As a Land Surveyor my ruler faux pas usually goes the other way!! Inches, we don't need no stinkin' inches!!

DOH!! Who hasn't had a day like that in the shop?? I mean, I never have, but I'm sure most other makers do:D You did the right thing Ryan, when it's going like that the last thing you need to do is press on. That's how little mistakes turn into BIG mistakes! Backing off with a beer is a wise move at that point;)

You should have water quenched it at 1100C. I heard that a higher the austenizing temp coupled with an extreme quench, makes it harder, tougher, sharper and flexier(for the 90deg bend test).

You missed your opportunity, bud.... now, you will probably never put yourself in position for greatness again. If I ever get the chance, I'm gonna try to quench in kerosene w/dry ice added.... I heard that's REALLY cold.

I are smart, watch me on the youtube:p
