To take apart my xm-18, but I do not have the spanner tool. Would you guys advise me against doing this without the tool?

I think you'll be fine without the tool. Plenty of people have done it without it.

I'd get the tool and not risk dinging my knife up - if you're one of the types that likes taking your knives apart, inspecting and keeping the internals squeaky clean. :)

A 1/16th allen wrench fits the slot perfectly. I have used a couple of those in there and it worked just fine.

Make a tool out of an old screwdriver for eg.

This is what Pieter was talking about doing (picture is not mine.) It's the screwdriver on the left-hand side of the bench. You don’t absolutely have to have the Hinderer tool to take the XM-18 apart but I do recommend buying at least one of them.

Best of luck!

Thank you all very much. I made the screwdriver tool, but I still want get the keychain armorers tool when my wife allows me to spend some more money on my hobby. :)
