I'm thinking about finally throwing down on a Sebenza, but I have questions?

I am finally seriously thinking about giving in to the Large Sebenza. I really like TI scales, and that blade shape is just too perfect. However, I have two questions before I dive in.

Strength of blade/knife: I open beer bottles with my Emerson all of the time . Is a Sebenza strong enough to do this? It doesn't take much force. I've handled a small sebenza clone but it was a long time ago

Wear: I'm pretty sure I want a Micarta inlayed Sebenza, but if I were to get a wood inlayed sebenza, do those wear as nicely as the blasted/stonewashed ones? I know this is a matter of opinion and can vary a lot, but I am curious. I've never seen a worn wood inlayed Sebenza.

The hollow ground Sebenza blade will not hold up to prying bottle caps. If that's your application, get a stout cheapie like a Buck 110 or a Kershaw Cryo II

I would not subject a Sebenza to that sort of abuse, it would almost certainly chip the edge eventually. It's very thin behind the edge, meant for good slicing ability but not prying.

The Micarta inlays wear very well, as the Ti handles are blasted. The wood inlays have polished handles which do not wear as well.

edit: It's worth mentioning that if you sent a blade damaged by prying in to Chris Reeve, it would almost certainly not be covered by warranty, and new blades cost something in the ballpark of $100.

The Sebenza will open bottle caps without any issues, go look/read on the CRK subform and find Kidcongo's review on his small wood inlay Sebenza. Can't really comment on why there are not more user wood inlays. Either the micarta or wood will be a good choice. Once you pull the trigger, be sure to post some pics :)

I'd rather use the edge of a counter or key to open a beer bottle than a knife. Hold off on the Sebenza and get a cap lifter.

I don't think there would be chipping of the edge if the OP uses the sebenza the same way to open a bottle as it appears he is using the spine of the blade. However, I think the spine of the sebenza is rounded so I don't know how that would affect holding the edge of the bottle cap.

how is having a hollow grind related to using the spine of the blade, and how is the edge going to chip opening a bottle like he demonstrated in the video? At least watch what he's doing with the knife before giving advice.

A sebenza certainly won't break doing that, but the spine is rounded so it may not be as easy.

Edit: looks like someone beat me to it

I think you'll be fine as you use the SPINE not the edge. And hope you enjoyed that new Belgium beer made in my hometown! !

Wow. Yeah, at least some of you noticed that I'm not trying to cut the cap off of my beer. ... And although, I prefer my knife blade to look like new, I don't mind the wear if it's just in the spot where I open bottles at. Although, I haven't noticed any wear makes on any of my stone washed knives yet. Thanks for the info.
If someone has a picture of a worn wood in layer sebenza, that would be great. I also welcome more people trying to tell me I'm a fool because I want to open my beer bottles with the sharpened edge of my knife.

Bill: "Hey Bob, do you want to use this drill to put a hole in the wall and stud?"

Bob: "No, I don't need the drill. I'll just drive the nail in by smashing the face of my Rolex into it several dozen times, lolololol."

...Right tools for the job, people.

The blade spine is rounded and the handle edges are chamfered so it's not a piece of cake to pop tops with a Sebenza. I'm sure you could get a hang of it, though. Beer will assuredly help your technique :D:thumbup:

Get a micarta Sebenza and one of these.

For what it's worth I use my knives (fixed and folders) to open beers all the time. It's alway funny to see the look on someones face when I use the handle on my CRKT M21 to open a beer bottle, has saved several nights when an opener was forgotten. There's only so many park bench edges you can maul opening bottles before you search for a better way... :)
