I'm thinking of getting a UKPK just in case

Although I hate the idea of traveling to places that are so dumb as to ban lock-bladed knives, as of this moment I am thinking of acquiring a UK Pen Knife just in case I need a carry-legal knife for such a locale.

What do you think? Would you do the same, even if you don't plan to EDC the knife where you currently reside?

How much are they costing lately?

The UKPK is in production and won't be difficult to get anywhere, (once we're out of back-order ;)

I carrry one when travelling to foreign countries, for the same reasons you mentioned.

We do have a 2.5" design "in the works" that is even more NKP friendly (Non Knife People).

We've also got a Ralph Turnbull design non locking folder is the works with a 3" blade.

Sal, another reason to consider wider production of <2.5" non-lockers is that some day, the powers that be may once again allow airline passengers to carry sub-2.5" knives... If they do, not only will such a knife be legal in that respect, it will also be the knife people would take for travel in non-locking-knife countries abroad.

I dunno. I've brought a Delica to the UK, to .nl, to .de, to .at, to to .ch and to .th with no issues, but I generally don't put myself into situations where that'd be an issue.

That said, if I knew I'd be spending an extended period of time (30+ days) in one of those locations, I'd probably give it serious consideration.

I really like the fact that Spyderco has made a knife that is legal in some of these places, and were I to spend some time in them, I'd have one. But certainly not just in case.

I will admit to some apprehension in Chicago recently, though, as a result of my newfound knowledge regarding locking blades within the city limits.

You're kidding me -- Chicago bans lockblades?!

Well, if that's the price we have to pay to have Chicago be such a crime-free utopia, isn't it worth it? :barf:

Chicago doesn't ban locking knives, but they do ban knives with blades longer than 2.5". 1.5" if you're under 18.:thumbdn:

I did that exact same thing. I love it!! And I wanted to get one, just because. It IS a fantastic knife!! Although, I think the DKPK would be better suited for world travel. I could be wrong on that.

I guess you solve a problem you don't have

@benh: In .at (=Austria) you can carry knifes that are even forbidden in parts of USA :D

Thank you for the reminder:D I was sooooo disappointed when I couldn't get either here, but it just dawned on me that I am going to 'Vegas week after next for the BCA North American 8 Ball Championship. I wasn't planning on a knife hunt, but.........there's a knife shop very close to our venue that I visited a couple of years ago.......... and with any sort of luck, one of the Wal-Marts there will have a Native......I think I need to take more cash.....:D I wonder if I can get an advance on my "allowance";)

Jeffrey, by all means, do get a UKPK. I've had mine since December and I love it. I got it from Heinnie Haynes, as they were not really available here. I find that it is plenty secure for the majority of things you would use a small pocket knife, and is actually easier to close one handed than a similarly sized lock-back. It's one of only a very few of my knives that has NOT cut me. :o

Hi Gord I can confirm that Walmarts have the Native here in Vegas...at least the one on Rainbow between the streets of Sahara and Flamingo (that would be west of the strip). I have seen them at that store with my own eyes. ;)

Bonus:thumbup: Many thx for that. Our team should be arriving about a day early from our start time so we can acclimatize, get some practice in (different type of tables this year) and get caught up on sleep - we are driving down from Calgary. Just a short 20 hour drive..... While they sleep - I'll go knife hunting:) Don't gamble that much - a few bucks here and there on the slots.

This sounds interesting. Same basic design as the UK Penknife but smaller?
