A friend of mine asked me what is the smallest Victorinox SAK with:
Scissors
Pliers
Flathead screwdriver (preferably a large and a small)
Phillips head driver
Corkscrew (for the mini-driver moreso than the Corkscrew)
The only thing I could think of is maybe the Super Tinker which is close to this description but not quite there... and I can think of a lot of other models that have all these but are quite thick.
I've found many models that have 2/4 or 3/4 of the components but not all of them.
It seems that it's rather diffcult to satisfy the Corkscrew AND Phillips head requirement as doing so requires the inline Phillips head driver. This rules out a lot of the thinner models like the Tinker that are otherwise very close.
He could possibly live without the Scissors but everything else is an absolute must.
I have deduced the following ideal configuration:
Leftmost backspring: Large blade and combo tool
Next Backspring: Scissors
Next Backspring: Pliers
Next: Phillips Driver and magnifying glass (because these always come in pairs)
Underneath: Corkscrew and whatever else
I came up with a less than desirable but much more realistic configuration:
Leftmost backspring: Large blade and small blade (standard pairing)
Next Backspring: Scissors
Next: Pliers
Next: Phillips Driver and Magnifying Glass (standard pairing)
Rightmost: Combo Tool and Can Opener (standard pairing)
Underneath: Corkscrew and whatever else
Basically if you think about it that way, a Cybertool 34 with the bit driver replaced by a Phillips head driver/magnifying glass would fit the bill.
I showed him my Cybertool 34 and said it was perfect except he has no use for the bit driver and would strongly prefer a traditional Phillips driver in its place. I can understand why as he is not the kind of person who carries a second multitool like I do to cover the defeciences of both and the traditional Phillips driver is more rugged.
Also the Cybertool 34 is just a little bit too big for him. If only it was just one backspring thinner.
It seems though that any SAK that meets his requests is going to be a thick model, but I know that it could be done in a slightly thinner 4 backspring package by omitting the large blade / small blade and combo tool / can opener configurations with the standard large blade/ combo tool configuration I presented in my first listing. But I don't know of any such model. Does it exist and I just don't know of it?
The Explorer is darn close to my second configuration.... ughhhhh!
As soon as I decide one model is the answer I come across another one that seems better. I think I'm thinking about it way too hard and overcriticizing every choice I make.
Maybe if I could show him some of the models that do 3 out of 4 he could live with one of them... but still.... urrrgh!
