I bought this from RUSS THOMAS RUSS THOMAS a month+ ago.

It is exactly what I was looking for!

Thick (5/32"), heavy (201g), strong. A little over 4" blade.

The handle has a little bit of a twist. In addition, the handle is not just two pieces of wood slapped together; they're shaped to conform to a fist, complimenting the twist. This guy knows what he's doing, I am super impressed!

The sheath fits snug and it snaps in and out! There is place to put my thumb to push on and easily eject the knife.... very impressed!

And daaaaamn, does 1095 rust quickly!!! This is my new camping knife so I have absolutely no care about the corrosion. Also, it basically just rubs off.

The main duty of this knife is to strike a magnesium stick to start a fire. It does great!

The twist shifts the weight of the handle into my fist providing a stronger grip.

I may be over exaggerating the significance here.. it is only a couple degrees.

In conclusion, the handle fits my hand great!

The maker is probably like "I don't know wtf that guy is talking about" LMAO

Are you using the front of that on the rod?

The previous knife I was using on that rod was 420 steel that didn't dig in so hard like the 1095. After getting the hang of the new knife, the rod now has a tip on it that prevents a full stroke with the blade. I decided to get a new one yesterday, but he military store was closed.

The 420 steel knife was actually better than the new one. It had heavy rollover on it that made for large long burning sparks after switching hands. Kept the knife steady and pulled the rod instead. Lit a fire on the first stroke using dead grass from my yard.

I don't plan on sharpening the lower part of the blade anytime soon.

Will using a ferro rod cause any localized problems with the temper? I have a ferro rod, but I always use my leatherman with it, not my knife. Course I always have my leatherman on me too.

Dang auto correct.

I had to look that up! And it turns out I have a ferro rod, not a mag rod! Damn! Thanks!

0% concerned with chipping this blade from the heat, but you bring up a good point. I'm surprised I didn't think about already.

I'm certain the ferro rod I have is made in China. Bout to order a quality one : )

I really like the magnesium bars with a ferro rod on them. Magnesium burns very hot, 5,000 degrees I think. Doan is the USA made brand best I recall.

I don’t know that the China ferro rods aren’t just as good. All the ones I’ve had less the doan fire starter have been Chinese.

You can take a knife and shave a pile of the ferro dust off and then spark that and it’ll help if the tinder is harder to catch.

I was just wondering, are you using the blade edge to strike the rod?

Yes, it is necessary to get a good spark. I may have a crappy rod, though. I'll find out soon when I compare to others I'll be ordering.

Also, I know about shaving off a pile of metal and striking that. It's not as fun as shaving off a large spark.

Some are afraid to Flitz their blades for fear of dulling the edge, while others are throwing it against fire rods... I think we have our bases covered. 🤣
hahaha. ya... I wouldn't want to use my EDC for it, I like my apex 100%, no gouges. I have no problem fixing it (Tormek), I just don't want to shave off all that metal.

Most importantly, a super sharp blade just digs into the rod, very poor job of making sparks. That's why I have my beater blade that is ideal for camping.

Man that sucks. They were gov issue and I got mine from the military surplus store in town some years back. Lost it when my house burnt and never got another.

Any chunk of magnesium will work the same though. If ya know what to look for, you can find a chunk of magnesium easy enough.

I use the spine of my blade. It has a nice sharp 90 degree angle on it and does a great job, plus it saves the edge.

Eric

I don't have experience with ferro rods to speak of, but I read that if the spine of the knife is cut with relatively sharp edges, not rounded, it will do a better job of striking sparks. I can't imagine using the cutting edge of my knife!

I’ve experimented with using the edge and the spine on various knives. The square edge on the small screwdriver of my leatherman pst is what I’ve settled on. It does dull your edge but in a pinch you do what you got to. I never did it enough on the edge to see if it had lasting effects on the heat treat.

I don't think i've ever heard of using the edge to strike a rod, normally it's just on the spine of the knife to keep the edge sharp and intact
