Image question...?

Wanted to share some pictures I posted on another forum <wildernessfourms.net> but got a "No Hotlinking" image instead (please see example below)...

Have often used Face Book to upload pictures (makes it real easy!), then posted pics in threads here by copying the image URL without any problems. This other forum also make posting pics easy, so was hoping to use it.

Not sure if its because its another forum that it is considered Hotlinking - really don't want to do anything wrong as I really enjoy this forum!

Thank you,

Hi River8 -

The site where you posted your pictures is not allowing the images to show up here.

The reason for this is that the other site is incurring "bandwidth" charges, that is to say that whenever someone downloads a file (in this case an image), their host tally's up the total file size that was processed across the network.

Since the owner of the web site you posted that image to is charged based on how many files are downloaded per month (typically), then they are getting charged for you to use their hosting to present images here where they get no benefit from it.

It is considered bad form to link to other peoples hosted images.

All you need to do is get a picasa/fotki/imageshack etc etc hosting site and point to your own hosted images.

best regards -

The other forum is blocking the images from being used outside of their site, not BFC. You'll have to upload them on BFC or to a host that doesn't disable outside linking.

ETA: mqqn beat me and said it better. Heed his advice.

Gentleman,

Thank for your input and information!

That's exactly the sort of thing I hope to avoid... :o

"You'll have to upload them on BFC" so IS there a way to do that on this forum without using some other hosting site? In the past I've used my website (riverside-graphics.net); resizing, FTPing, hosting and all that rot, but find it much easier when sites like that one let me do it directly...

Again, I really appreciate your guidance!!

Personally, I prefer Photobucket. It's quick to download and label a picture there, and I get a URL with

When you start a thread (or reply), in the top row of buttons, there is a paperclip. Click on that and it'll open up a dialog box that lets you upload a pic from your PC or from another website. Those pics will be attached as thumbnails to the bottom of your post. To post the pics fullsize, right click the pic you want in that dialog box and copy image location, then use that addy with the IMG button like any other pic. Hope that helps, bro.

Oops. Never been a basic member, so wasn't aware it wasn't available to them. In that case, something like Photobucket is good.

Basic Member
Bare bones membership that allows avatars, signatures, limited attachments and private messaging. Does not allow selling in Exchange area

According this, Basic does get some attachments. Probably not many.

Ok now THAT was Easy...!!
