The Rangers competing in BRC are notorious for practicing an event for its potential re-emergence the following year. We anticipated this and pursuant to the directing SGM's instructions, we changed up the event to a different Tomahawk, (Vietnam Tactical over last year's Rogers' Rangers Spike) and further included the Ranger Throwing knife, which was designed specifically for the competition.
We also changed the scoring.
Last year, we had a scoring round similar to the American Knife Throwers Alliance international contest rules...3,2, and 1 scoring areas.
This year, it was simply a go/no-go station, meaning, after the 3 practice throws, BOTH Rangers in the two-man team had to stick their 4th throw...knife AND hawk. If one stuck, it was a no-go, If none stuck, it was a no-go. ANYWHERE on the target was a go if both stuck.
The Ranger Team had to decide right away as they approached the throwing field who was gonna get the knife and who was gonna get the Hawk. Sometimes, after the first throw, they would switch to see who liked which instrument best.
We had 1 "go" out of the 15 Ranger Teams remaining for our event by Day 2 after the 21 mile evening road march.
The scoring simplicity and added difficulty TOTALLY threw some of the Rangers off, as they had been practicing with our RR Spike Hawk all year and were bewildered when handed a 24 oz. throwing knife or a lighter, faster turning Vietnam Tactical Tomahawk!
They ALL thoroughly enjoyed the event however, and we have already begun discussions with Ranger Training Brigade about the event for next year.
Thanks.
