I can devote that much time, but ud justget a roundish blob with a 4 foot pile of shavings :o
While i love whittling and its what i do for hours when i do, i usually zone off and think, peacefull, i think i should try to get better, instead of just shaving the wood, but I don't know...

Thats some awesome work! If i tried that, well, id get a roundish blob :D
I use my trustee 0200 for whittling, while i suck i do notice how well the recurved blade is for crater effects, and rounding corners, what kind of knife did you use?

That looks great. My wife, Wendy, uses a cane. I would love to carve one for her...I may have to give it a try. :)

Beautiful work. Where did you find such a straight piece?

where do you guys get your carving wood from, and what kind of wood is best for carving?

Basswood is good, and I practice on soft pine sometimes. I'm in school now, so I don't have a lot of time these days.

Almost any woodworker supply place will have such.

As an aside, two dogwoods where cut down in my neighborhood this year. Those are curing in my garage now. They'll be ready in a couple of years.

I don't worry about what's best for carving (most use bass wood). I carve woods I like, and those are all hardwoods like walnut, cherry, maple, red oak etc. Just need pieces with grain as straight and dense as I can find.
