I know this resipe' calls for a vaccume pump, and bell jar. but a piece of iron pipe could work for the bell jar and a vaccume pump can be salvaged from an old refrigerator.

1.cut your wood to rough size. (Birch works well, as do the maples)

2.mix powder anoline dye into one part of a 12 hour (or 24 hour) slow set epoxy. mix enough epoxy to compleetly submurge the wood.

3.place wood in small tray. cover with epoxy, place tray in bell jar. turn on vaccume pump.

THEORY.the vacume pump draws the air out of the wood. epoxy frows in and takes the airs place. (I've never tried this, but have a friend that swears by it)

I am thinking that if you use a steel pipe you might want to remove the wood befor the epoxy sets up. chipping them out of a piece of steel doesn't sound fun, and 5 or6 hours in a vacume should be enough

unset epoxy can be cleaned up with with vinager,
(wear a dust mask epoxy dust isn't good for you either) red on birch looks much like rosewood. you might try clear on your birdseye maple it will be almost indistructable.

have fun.EE

Thanks Eric. It sounds like a high power method of stabalizing. I may rig up something and try it.

after posting this I remembered a piece of burl that upon close inspection, the grain has blown apart.(sigh)

I might have to try some and see if it will repair.
