I know this is off topic, talking about firearms but I only have a few short hours and don't know where else to turn. I am leaving for hawaii and need to know a simple answer, can i take a handgun on board an aircraft if it is in check in? and what are the laws in hawaii on firearms thanks, jeff

Hi

bringing it over shouldn't be a problem, I don't think you going to get a permit to carry.

Taking it on the aircraft is no problem.

It must be in checked baggage. It must be unloaded, preferably disassembled. You must declare it. Any ammo must be in a separate bag. Some airlines do not permit live ammo. Others limit the quantity. My experience has been that airline clerks are cool about the whole thing. As you check in, you just say, "there is a firearm in this case." The clerk will ask you if it's loaded, if you have any ammo with it, etc., and will make double sure that the case is locked, and off you go. No big deal.

I assume that since Hawaii is a state, it's ok to own a gun there. Call the police department of a major city (get the number from information) and ask for details.

Call ahead to the airport and tell them you want to transport a firearm. It must be declared at check in and turned over at the ticket counter.

I am told the Aloha state has very restrictive firearms laws. I would suggest checking the web for a state web site for the legal'eze of your questions.

Stay Sharp,

Oh, one more thing: Some airports are now using a machine to test bags and passengers for explosive residues. It's often done on a random or every n-th passenger basis. They'll run a treated cloth around the outside of your bag concentrating on the handle and then also ask you to wipe your hands on a similar cloth. The cloths are then ran through what I assume is some sort of gas chromatograph machine. The last time this happened to me at PDX I was going to the airport to pick someone up. As I was leaving for the airport, I remembered not to take my gun along. I handled the gun, which was very clean, just long enough to put it back in a secured locker in my house. I did not wash my hands since I didn't consider them soiled by just putting a clean gun away. I had not fired a gun in weeks. At the airport, my hands tested positive for explosive residue. I explained to the guard that yes, I had handled a gun less than an hour ago. Fortunately, I had passed the metal detector with no problem and had no bag, so I was dismissed. But, I would caution you to wash your hands throughly after handling the gun and not to pick up your bag until after you've washed.

You can take a firearm in your luggage, all ammo must be in original factory boxes and in a SEPERATE luggage container...the gun must be unloaded and most carriers specify that it must be in a LOCKED case, but not all. Hawaii is a state, you can bring a gun here but you are supposed to register it with the PD within 48 hrs of arriving, however how will they ever know....I would be careful....if you are staying in a hotel keep it locked in your suitcase....the laws here are strict.....you can keep it in your residence or your place of business or in the trunk to and from the range or hunting. any more questions email me....you are probably already in bed and this post is too late......good luck.
