So last night around midnight I was having this dream involving Eva Longoria, a bucket of chicken, and the 50-yard line at Giants Stadium...er..uh...let's save that part of the story for another forum...

So last night around midnight my wife wakes me up saying, "Mike, you gotta see this moth!" I get up at 4:00 AM so she doesn't wake me up at midnight unless it's pretty good. My first thought was Actias luna, since I have seen a number of Luna moths around, but I realized that she would have made that identification herself and probably wouldn't have woken me. So I grab my Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W80 and go out to the porch. I immediately recognized it as a Saturniid, probably genus Eacles, but I wasn't sure of the species. So what say you all - Eacles imperialis? I'm in Northern Virginia.

Unfortunately I didn't realize that the resolution on the camera was set to VGA due to some HazMat work I was doing where files would be emailed so small files were more important than improved resolution. I was half asleep and just started snapping. I hope they aren't too bad. I grabbed a Bic lighter and put it down next to the moth in one of the shots to give some perspective on its size.
