Anyone have any experience with the UH's from China? I've been so impressed with RR's...

I have purchased many and love Rough riders but the Taylor brand Schrades are a POS. I grabbed a horn handled whittler, wouldn't cut butter, won't hold and edge, horn is shrinking and curling by the day, swedges are not as shown in promo pics. Stick to Rough rider, they are great knives.

I find that the U.S Uncle Henry's are still quite well priced, so I buy them, mind you...I have opened myself up to correction & criticism there - as I havent used the China U.H's as of yet, but I have used the China Imperial Schrade...but not yet had to sharpen it-its darned sharp!, this was gifted to me by Seals with one of my purchases from him
When at first I opened the China Imperial...whew!!...just about a 9 to open the thing, worked its way down to a 7 now I'd say.

I had a taylor 34OT that I bought thinking it was an original. Wasn't worth holding down the envelope it came in. Stick with the USA Schrades.

That would be like buying a Chinese Case.To me it's just wrong.

Lets hope it doesnt come to that. All politics aside China is producing some good knives now.I buy a lot of them to check out patterns and give away to friends and customers.(happy to hear thats getting some use Duncan):D Rough Rider,Buck,Boker,Colt and perhaps others have a terrific line of China produced knives. When Taylor took over the Schrade line every one i looked at closely was very dissapointing in quality. They seem to have picked things up lately though.I tried out a few of the Imperial Schrade knives and have found them to be excellent for the price paid. The scales are plastic, but not unattractive and the fit and finish ive found to be very good. Some of the Schrade patterns look really good being copies of old patterns and i currently have a few on order.I dont make near the money i used to so its been a way for me to keep buying lots of knives which is something ive always done.I still buy USA knives too, mostly Case and Buck, but only occasionally or for a customer project.Back to the Schrades, they are so cheap, there is really no reason to not try it and see for yourself.Be sure to let us know what you think and include some pics!;)

Agreed. I like my old knives American. But then I rarely carry them. Prefer to carry a knife that could easily be replaced.

My experience is the same. Many excellent, inexpensive China made knives, but the ones with Uncle Henry or Old Timer branding are not in this grouping.
They are just O.K. and don't feel anywhere near as solid as many of the China made knives.
Hi quality, pre 2004, USA made, real Schrade knives are available on ebay. Collector interest is growing so unused examples with original boxes are getting expensive, but lightly used ones that are still basically perfect, can go for under $20.

Thanks for the comments guys. I have lots of old Schrade USA knives. I was just wondering if I could get a beater UH that would be decent. Most of my old knives are retired. :)

Well, I had to find out for myself. Got a Uncle Henry (large stockman) in the mail today. I love old Schrade knives. I was fully prepared to hate and return this knife. I have lots of RR's, but something about Schrade seems sacred to me. But I can't say it's a bad knife. Hell, its a good knife. Good F&F. Sharp as hell. Steel seems OK. Slight blade rub and odd shape to the spey, but it's a decent knife. I may keep it, I may give it away to someone. I don't know. But I was surprised to say the least. I'll put up some pics later.
