I will be discontinueing several models in the near future. For certain the full size Scout will be one of them, possibly the Backup and Neckmuk. I`ll be posting which they are soon.

The scout is going bye-bye? Say it ain't so!

This is one of my favorite knife designs; not just of yours, but of anyones!

John , I would like to request that you keep the scout . I know you haven't sold many but it is at the top of the price scale . It's a great knife design. give us a little more time .

Nothing is for sure, yet! I`ve received several emails asking that these be kept in the line. If you think they should stay, drop me a line why you think they should. The hatchet will go, they are costly to make, and not popular. To the 3 guys that have them, smart move, they are probably the best tool I have ever made.

My personal thought is that you should simply keep the patterns and make them to order. I know I'd like to have a scout and a Neckmuck. In addition to a fullsize Nessmuk.
The problem is the economy. I can't buy until I have money.
Just my devalued .02

I feel the same way about the hatchet. I can't afford one right now, but think it is a great product. (Plus, I have several other knives I want from you first!).

Not to put down any knife of yours, but the hatchet is an outstanding tool!

My thoughts on discontinuing products from the line.... I know you keep your patterns, but I would also keep pictures up on your website and put them under past work. With your new add coming out in backwoodsman magazine you never know who is going to check out your site or what might catch their eye. No point in keeping anything from them.

I am all about the little hatchet... if it had been around another day or two, I would have bought it.

My scout is so well done, I had planned on getting another one built at one point.
I am really shocked that you only moved two of them. I've have 3 knives on my livingroom table for maybe three months or so. A new model Gerber MK2, a custom made smatchett, and your scout. Everyone loves the smatchett (thing is HUGE), but they all end up playing with the scout the most.

Stupid money. Well, stupid when you don't have a pile of it.

Maybe just keeping the designs on file would be the way to go.

What has got me pissed off about the hatchet is that another maker just started making copies, same specs, right down to the oak handles, and is selling it cheaper than I can think of selling it for. Why should I try to compete with that?

Yeah I noticed those, if ya come up with something that has an origional twist maybe you should start getting a copyright !

Don't compete. Your friends will buy yours when we want one. Just be ready when we order one!

I agree with protourist.
I buy a lot of knives. Over the past few years, I have drifted away from asthetics and pure usefulness to a combination of the forementioned and 'personality'. Personality is what I get from the maker, along with the tool I end up with.

When I deal with you, you don't just shove a chunk of metal into a box, mail it my way then call it a day.
I get, beyond e-mails, pictures both online and via your forum concerning my knife's progress. I get useful advise about what to order, what steel to choose, etc.
And, you stand behind your work. No excuses. No conditions.

Those are some of the reasons I am a customer of yours. The last 3 custom knives I have purchased have been from you. The knife on my nightstand is one of yours.
When I designed my own blade, I came to you to build it for me. If I remember correctly, I didn't even ask how much it would be when we were planning., 'cause I knew you'd charge what was fair.

Screw that other bastard. He might make a few sales now, but he will not get the repeat business you do, in the long run.

And I bet that hatchet sucks. He's cutting corners somewhere.

i look at buying a lot of other knives, but at the end of the day i always end up ordering from john. why?

1. the designs are practical and they work
2. they are well built
3. john is as honest as they come and great to work with.

i had a small problem with a knife i ordered from him a while back. i just wanted to bring it to his attention and he offered me a full refund. not something i asked for or even suggested. in the end i got the knife working for me and havent looked back but when you get treated like that you end up going back to them. especially now when money is tight and you dont want to just buy any knife. Thanks John and when i get through this crappy economic situation you will have more of my money.
