Let me begin by stating that the following information might cause excessive excitement, so read on carefully...

Most of you know by now that Jerry Busse had a terrible accident last year with his right hand, requiring reconstructive surgery and big time physical therapy...well...it's amazing how a knifemaker's spirit can create something good from something bad.

As a result of Jerry's never ending concern in retrieving product feedback from his customers in the field, as well as his personal need to work with hand doctors and bone movement specialists for over a year, Jerry has redesigned the handles on the entire Combat Line (Battle Mistress, Steel Heart, Badger Attack, and Mean Street).

This IS the MOST ERGONOMIC AND ANATOMICALLY CORRECT handle EVER on a Busse Knife. As far as I know, this handle is the ONLY handle endorsed by an orthopedic and medical team for design and engineering. You should see these new handles 2nd quarter of 2000.

In the very near future Busse Combat Knives will be moving its sheath emphasis from Kydex to Tactical Leather. Field data and requests from customers have been overwhelming in the need for a sheath which is quiet, impervious to warm weather, unbreakable, and able to carry a stone or other accessory. A kydex lined cordura sheath will remain an option, but the new standard sheath will be leather rig which is the END OF THE ROAD in quality for leather rigs. Leather has been the choice of combat knifemakers and military personnel since the beginning of combat, and many sheaths are still around to tell their story. You can expect to see them included with your favorite Busse knife toward the end of first quarter, 2000.

In addition to the new handle, the Mean Street's profile is being redesigned with a wider 3.5" blade, similar to the width found on Basic #3 and Badger Attack...If you're fond of the original slim style, order it now, because once their gone, their gone. The new model should be available 2nd quarter of 2000.

Busse Combat strongly anticipates a production over-run on a government order of Desert Warfare Mean Streets: same design as the current standard model except handles are tan canvas micarta. I will have the over-run of these knives and they should be available quite soon.

I am available for any of your questions.

Andy glad to hear Jerry is working on the handles it is the most obvious area that is in need for improvement on the INFI line. Concerning the sheaths though I don't see leather as an upgrade but as the opposite. However I don't need a silent draw nor does it get very hot around here. Just out of curiousity how hot does it have to get before the Kydex sheaths deform? Has there been any problem with the Kydex sheaths fracturing in extreme cold?

Thanks for your note Cliff.

Jerry has had reports of Kydex deforming and losing tight knife retention when left in a hot vehicle...the cab of a Hummer in the Middle East was one of a few examples. Busse Combat uses thick kydex as well...

Thinner kydex, which is widely used for a good knife print by several other knife companies, deforms much more quickly.

As far as cold conditions are concerned, reports of cracking around the edges and lips of the sheath outweigh acute breakage.

I am not personally aware of what the upper and lower real limits are specifically, but I will find out.

Major advantages of the leather include accessory pouches for sharpening accessories, silence, weather resistance, and long usefulness (measured in years of reliable service).

...an update on the leather sheaths:

The welt which engages the edge of the blade in the sheath is made from a special rubber compound...EXCELLENT longevity and strength characteristics, improving the entire integrity of the sheath...including the cam locking action which holds the knife in place.

The welt is also non-abrasive and won't even remotely dull the edge itself.

The sheaths are black, through dyed and dipped, and coated for wet environments.

Accessory pouches are available on the leather sheaths as an option.

Cliff,

Kydex deformation with heat probably depends on the type of kydex, stresses in the kydex (such as rivets), and thickness.

Kydex sheets will deflect at about 175 F. I don't recall the sheet thickness or type of kydex this information is from. It is from one of the ASTM test and a load was placed on the kydex. I'll see if I can find the details. I think it is molded at around 325 F.

Andy,
How about suggesting to Jerry to sell his knives with the option of a Kydex or a leather sheath? As far as leather is concerned, it absolutely can't take high humidity and moisture very long, without at least getting covered in mold, or at worst, rotting and falling apart. Better yet, I think a quality Kydex lined heavy duty Cordura would be the way to go. It will be interesting to see the new handles, although I am completely satisfied with the ones on my SH, BM, and MS.

I think a wider blade on the MS would be OK, but again, I am very happy with the one I have. That's just a matter of personal taste.
Jerry is always trying to improve his knives, and that's one thing I think he deserves to be commended for.

Andy, if you can, post pictures of the new sheaths and handle designs when you get them.

Will, thanks for the info.

Andy,
will the leather sheaths be available for purchase seperately for those of us who already have kydex sheaths? If so, will the knives have to be sent in for custom fitting? Any idea on price, timing?
Gee, I never thought I'd find myself wishing that my Busses took even longer to arrive!

Volvi...I will mention your suggestion to Jerry. Thanks for your comments about Busse Combat's constant endeavor to improve and push the boundaries of high performance knives.

Cliff...yes..I will have pictures of everything on my website... www.sharperinstinct.com when it is up.

HJK...I don't think the leather will be available for the current designs, but I will find out. I will also find out about custom fitting. The leather sheaths should permeate the entire line of Busse's knives by 2nd quarter this year.

This type of thread is one of the reasons I frequent the forum. Maybe one might quibble about under which topic it belongs, but I'm glad I found it.

Andy, thanks for the post. I was unaware of his accident. I wish him all the best and a full and speedy recovery. Jerry is an easy man to deal with and cares about his customers. I am well pleased with my Steel Heart II.
I for one am glad to hear about the leather sheaths, and would hope to get one soon. The kydex that came with my knife is not the securest sheath in the world, and an accessory pocket would be a welcome addition. Any idea on a price?
