Important Notice! Microsoft SP2 may be running out soon? Not really sure what's going

Dunno really what that means. ????
I think it means if you want it and don't have it then you had better get on the stick and download it, but I could be wrong. ;)

Looks like the people who refuse to install sp2 are being told that if they have any problems, it's on their heads for not installing the fixes in sp2, someone's getting tired of logging the same calls over and over with the same solution -ie. "Install SP2, the fix is in there."

there is no expiry date mentioned for XP with sp2, and 98,98se and ME have just been extended...

"When support for a product ends, support of the service packs for that product will also end"

Not to worry ...windoze (whatever version) with service packs installed won't just stop working. It just means that micro$oft is focusing their efforts on developing new software rather than writing fixes and patches for the old software indefinitely. This translates to more $$$ for billy.

This actually doesn't present too much of a issue anyway. Seems service packs often cause more problems than they resolve. Many folks (including this alleycat) don't install service packs at all -and everything works fine. Some of the security holes addressed by the SPs can be fixed with simple free downloads. Other than that, using a competent firewall, a good virus scanner, an alternative web browser and avoiding outlook express altogether goes a long way toward evading problems. Downloading & installing the latest version of DirectX does enhance media playback though.

(...psssssst Yvsa, if you ever need the latest full version of a M$ product just E-mail me :) )

Thanks BillTheCat. I will but I don't have your address since my system went down last summer and I lost everything. I think the last time I looked you didn't have your email addy listed?

Don't worry about it. Thats just an info site. Microsoft will still support WindowsXP till a few years after they release a new OS and XP is still the only one out there for consumers.

Edit - Doh! should have looked further down on the screen before Posting. Bill said about what I did. LOL. BTW A friend of mine is on the Microsoft XP Tech Support team and according to him, it's still going strong.

The Windows Update won't get SP2. I keep tryin' but it always just stops. Darndest thing. I guess I'm just SOL. :(

That's OK, though. I'm gettin' new computer this summer. I hope alienware. I like gaming! :D

Namaarie, what do you mean "Windows Update won't get SP2?"

I take it that you start downloading it and then it stops? Are you sure you have enough room for it? I set my computer on auto update because of several recommendations and have never had any problems with it, SP2 that is.
Did the firewall that comes with it download?
Go to "Start" and then "Control Panel" and look in there for "Windows Firewall" if it's there then you may have downloaded it and just didn't realize it?

I use XP Home Edition. The site linked says support of that product ends 12/31/06.
This is what it says when you pick your product. What I'm wondering is if Microsoft will extend the times like I'm understanding it has on some of the older MS OS's?
And I also wonder what the "Extended Support Retired means?
Doesn't matter anyway as this will probably be my last brand new computer. If it breaks I'm going to have to resort to replaceing parts in the tower up too and including the mother board.
It's a good thing my daughter has friends who know how to do this stuff because I sure don't. :grumpy:

Well it doesn't come out right but by following the links you can find the whole list of MS products and the dates.

Microsoft doesn't "support" anything they sell, so relax. It's not like when some special date comes windows will refuse to start.

This probably won't come out right either but I tried anyway.
Perhaps it's the trying to transfer html over to the UB Board?

Hell Everyone knows that!
I was just trying to perform a community service. Take it as you will.;)

Yeah, none of that stuff. My auto-update just doesn't work for it. I've heard mixed things about sp2, though. I'll just hold off a while. No problem with current system really. I get all the security updates anyhoo, so it's all good. :)
