important notice to my deployed/deploying bretheren

there has been a change in the regs concerning knives going back to the states.
its not the size of the knife, its the shape. if it appears to be a machete, it might not
be going back home.

understand, when i decided to have my FBM over here, i triple checked and re-checked again
to make absolutely 100% sure that everything was cool and that i would be able to bring it
home. however the other day during a layout my FBM was snatched up by customs.
i was informed that the reason it was a problem was the shape, that it looked similar enough
to a machete to fall under a new reg (change as of 2 weeks ago) that machetes can not be
brought back to the states. other, longer, knives that joes had bought off the streets, including
swords, were still getting through, but even issued machetes are either being signed
over to other units or trashed.

i was really sweating it for awhile, but i talked to the right people and got a memorandum from
my commander allowing to come home with the other weapons.
whew! that was a close one.
i swear, the battle mistress is cursed!!

Thats nuts. I just redeployed and I brought back a machete and several other longer knives none as long as the FBM. All those Navy dudes have time for in Kuwait is to bother us i guess, luckily you got it back all good. Welcome back!!!!!!!!1

glad to hear you got this taken care of, i was about to pull some strings for you.

glad to hear you got this taken care of, i was about to pull some strings for you and have it shipped to me.

There, I fixed it for ya..

Seriously though, good info. I have a good friend in the 82nd who is probably gonna need this heads up. He may have to mail his Busse's back home. Thanks!

Wow, Skunk...it's good to know you have such clout. Can you talk my boss into letting my bring a Glock and a BM into my classroom? :D:D:D

thanks everyone, but im not quite home yet. 2 maybe 3 more weeks! yay!
i should have been more specific, but i am still rattled and pretty damn hot about the entire ordeal.
the layout im talking about was for our milvans that all of our extra crap is getting shipped home in. the customs guy (navy dude from kwt) came through and supervised the layout, eyeballing everyones stuff.
i was packing my FBM in one of my duffel bags because the post office does have a 6 inch limit.
the commanders memorandum allows me to ship it back in the sensitive items milvan with all the crew serves and nvg's and such.

so to answer the question about mailing a knife, at this time no. the post office has the 6" length limit, and customs has the "shaped like a machete" restrictions.
my frustrations on this are that when i got here in jan07, none of these regs were in place.
also, after having been told on several occasions that i was good to go, AND watching this customs guy clear united cutlery type junk blades longer than my FBM, i'm the one that catches the BS.

anyway, i just want to try to get the word out so nobody gets blind sided and looses a personal blade over this crap.

That's really screwed up, I was unaware that Machete's had been banned from import in the United states. In fact unless I missed something big I'm pretty sure they aren't :( Whether this is a new reg, some stuff shirt trying to look important, or they really have been barred from import by US customs, that's just ridiculous.

Sounds like the Customs puke wants him some Busse!

Glad it all worked out! :D

Thanks for your service.

I agree with Rat-30...I think the Navy fellow recognizes a good blade when he sees it and basically wanted something for free. I generally try to give folks the benefit of the doubt, but there is something about this that just doesn't smell right to me.

Who the flying F#*K comes up with this type of shit.

EXACTLY! It's OK to be shot at, pooped on and have garbage bags blow up next to you, but hey, you can't bring that knife how you just lived with for 15-months.
