Important Q - magnatism?

I am in the process of creating a "Fixed Blade Wall" for my room. All of my FB"s will be on the wall (junk blades aside). I considered small nails, leave half of them exposed and slide rubber tubing over the exposed portion of the nail so the blade could rest on it without any metal to metal contact. I have also considered cutting wooden dowels into 1.5" pieces, drilling them out from top to bottom and driving a nail through the hole so only the dowel is exposed. While looking at "knife racks" online, I notice kitchen knives are commonly stored on magnetic strips. I could run these in different lengths, differing widths apart, and accommodate every blade size. I have to wonder tho - having good steel up against a magnet for long term (some are only taken down to be wiped down), can that be damaging to the structure of the steel? My steel types are all over the place SR101 (52100), 1095, San Mai, Carbon V, the list goes on. Is sticking a knife on a wall magnet, long term, an issue?

Thanks

I like the idea, I don't see any issues occurring with magnetic storage. Unless you are a machinist who is around chips with your knives regularly.

No long term issues that I know of, You can cover the magnets with PPF or Vinyl warp like used on cars if you are worried about scratches & you can chose different colors of wraps. I think PPF is 8mil thick & Vinyl is 3 or 4 mil thick just make sure the magnets strong enough after you cover it. i would definitely use good magnets test them with something a little more heavy than the knife you’re going to hang.

Shelves work. You can easily make them yourself as a project. You can make individual shelves attached to the wall or you can build entire shelving units which can be moved around as you see fit. You can also order shelves online. If you build them yourself they don't need to be very deep if they are only going to be used to display some knives.

I've used a bamboo magnetic kitchen knife stand for photos and such. Knives will get slightly magnetized. Doesn't both me, but might bother you ....

Here is how I store my larger, less used knives, also via magnets on steel sheaths that my wife glued on closet doors. Ugly iPhone photo, but you get the idea ....

I've been using magnetic tool strips covered with felt to display knives for years, they barely pick up any magnetism.

Does becoming magnetized effect any of the Steels other properties? That's my main concern. My knives being a little magnetic doesn't bother me IF that doesn't have an effect elsewhere - edge retention, hardness, toughness, wear resistance, etc.

It has zero effect on any physical properties.

Kule, glad to hear it. I'll start looking into some magnetic strips and felt. There are a lot of them, it is gonna be a crazy looking wall.

I had considered a couple wall mounted racks, like the old style wooden ones for rifles. Problem is the differing lengths. There's gonna be everything from a SOG Kiku 4" Fixed to a SRKW Rodent Waki on that wall.

Something else to consider would be peg boards. This will allow you wall-hang your knives and re-arrange them as you like without having to worry about them being magnetized.

Don’t forget the sheaths …
Sheaths just stay in a big, nearby pile

That makes sense, I will look into that. Even if one isn't big enough, I can probably put a few edge to edge and do a whole section of wall. Thanks

Another thing you could do if you go with the peg board idea is to run strips of LED lighting behind the peg boards to give off a nice backlighting effect. 🤔

Need some pictures of the finished product sir! 😉

Would but I'm leaning towards the whole "peg board" at his point. Unfortunately most peg boards come with a set of hooks so I'll have to buy and piece up a wooden dowel (or 3) that are the right diameter.

I still gotta get picks of my other stuff up - The wonky Drop Forged Boot (that went back to GSM) and the 8 stitches in my index finger 😁

I’ve got lots of knives on magnetic rails, most mounted on bushings such that another row of knives can rest in the slot behind them. They still cut stuff no problem.
