Important question. Help please...

First off, I'm 18 and new to the balisong scene but I'm quite interested in taking it up as a hobby. I don't have any butterflies yet though. I plan on ordering a balisong from KnifeZilla.com. My problem is this: I'm in MA. I've recently found that balisongs are prohibited in MA and CA. My question is am I going to get nailed by the feds for simply ordering the knife or is the law only against carrying the balisong on your person/in your car? I plan on not carrying it simply because I don't want to go to prison for a year if I get caught with it. I'm still planning on owning one however. I just want to know if ordering one online is risky due to my being in MA? Any info would be much appreciated. Thanks for your help.

Welcome to the forums! And especially the Balisong Forum.

In answer to your question, you should be fine. I order Italian stilettos all the time and they always get through. Furthermore, when customs seizes something it usually just results in a note and a slap on the wrist. At least that's what I hear. I may be wrong though so I'd wait to see what Gollnick or Clay have to say on the matter.

Thank you, Disco Stu, for the kind welcome and the insight.
Anybody have any other info or advice? I'd love to hear it. Clay?...Gollnik?
Thanks again.

Hi, I'm also new to Balisongs, I'm in CA and I ordered a Jaguar Balisong from KnifeZilla.com a week ago to practice with and I received it yesterday perfectly fine via UPS Ground. So I doubt you'll have problems getting it in MA.

I can guarantee you'll love your first balisong, I really enjoy mine, although a tip from a newbie, check your pockets before entering a Halloween Amusement Park with employees there w/ metal detectors machines at the entrance *DOH, common sense right? Man I'm an idiot

* , I was practicing the opening/closing all day after I received it from UPS, I totally forgot I left it in my pocket and when I walked in. The guy told me to spread em, after the first swipe, The metal detector went *BEEEEEP*, I put my hand in the pocket and I felt my jag, I'm like AWWWWWW ****!, my heart started throbbing, harder and harder, I totally freaked out, I knew I was gunna get caught, plus there were police at the gate. The guy told me to empty my pockets, I tried to stall to think of something, then it popped in my head I told him "shoot I have my swiss army knife in my pocket, I'll go put it in the car", I put my head down and walked away quickly. whew close call. Don't let this happen to you!

Anyway, go ahead and order and have fun!

I live in MA. I have been into balis as long as I can rember. I have bought quite a few from stores in MA and some through the mail. The first one that I got in the mail was one of the FISCAR'S (sp?) red plastic handle model back in the early eighties.
I have not had any trouble to date.
If you are the kind of person always being pulled over or "hassled"(if trouble finds you, always) by the police I would not suggest carring any knife or weapon. If you are not, just maintain a low profile and you should be fine. It works for me any way.
I think that KNIFEZILLA is in Amhurst MA. That's where PVKT was any way, I think they are the same place? Check out your local knife shops, they might have balis and than you do not have to worry about shipping.
Just my $.02 worth.

Ah, ok. Thank you very much to everyone who replied. I was just concerned because I'm new at this and I didn't want to get myself into serious sh!t by jumping into it blindly. I appreciate your help. Talk to you soon.

Yeah, I wouldn't worry too much about getting the Balisong. You'll definitly get it.

It's what happens after you have it that should concern you.

My tip, and this has gotten me off the hook several times.

If an officer pulls you over and finds your Balisong, he will ask you "What's this for??". This is a test, and how you answer will make a huge difference in how the rest of your day goes.

Never, I repeat NEVER under any circumstances say "it's for self defense".

That means the sole reason you have it is to hurt someone........ get it??

Remember: "It's a tool I use for Blah, blah, blah (insert non-violent excuse for posession here)".

........ then you just have to pray he's not having a bad day.

Contrary to popular belief, half of the US population does not work for some secret government agency that has an agent assigned to watch each and every other person 24/7. If you're reasonable about it, if you don't flip the thing around in public, take it into sensitive areas like public schools, and don't commit crimes with it, everything will be fine. It is unlikely that you'll be awakened one night at the point of an M16 by agents dressed in black who have decended into your neighborhood from silent black helicopters and stormed your house all because of your balisong.

Just be reasonable and keep the rest of your life clean.

It's the government that needs to be watched. I watch them, more than they watch me. As far as I am concerened, I follow the law better then those who enforce it. Of course I suppose that depends on who's understanding of the law you go by
