I was flipping through a BQM Catalog this morning and noticed that they were advertising the new, imported, Schrade Middleman Stockman's as haveing carbon blades. I thought they went stainless when Taylor bought the name and outsourced the product, didn't they?

Yep, watch for "Schrade+" (Plus), as it generally indicates a stainless steel rather than carbon blade, even on a USA made knife.

I haven't seen any Chinese/Taylor Schrades with carbon. They will try/say just about anything to sell those knives, though. I've seen outright lies on a certain auction site, for instance. Some sellers don't even seem to know, or if they do, they're doing a good job of playing dumb.

i once found an old timer penknife in a hardware store and the blister pack said carbon on it. i got excited that i had a pre-move carbon...then i got it home and stuck it in an apple and nothing happened...stainless after all.

Towards the end, they were using a mixed bag of stainless (some not even marked) and carbon blades on the "carbon models".

I thought Taylor was only distributing stainless knives, but I figured that I would check, since the models in question were usually carbon models before the ownership change.

Yep, my 34OT is not marked Schrade +, but it is stainless. And like you, I have yet to see a Taylor/Schrade that is carbon.

Conversely I just bought a Schrade scrimshaw stockman which I was told had stainless steel blades.I cut up an apple and the blade patina'd nicely .Sharp blades excellent walk and talk bonus carbon and mint condition for $25 .

i guess it's just semantics, but there is no Schrade any more. :grumpy: "Schrade" these days is not a company, just a brand name used by some company that outsources knives to China.
