Importing Khuks into Malaysia

This is my first posting to the HI forum although I've been lurking for quite sometime.

I bought some khukris (believed to made in Nepal by NKH & KH) thru some Nepalese security guards working at my work place. The quality seems to be quite decent although the finishing is quite rough.

The problem is that right now I am ready to buy some hi-end quality khuks made by HI (esp the 12" pen) but I have serious doubt whether the khuks would be delivered to me without the custom's hassle as importing & carrying any types of weapons (or something that can be defined as a weapon) is a very serious offense here. Could any one of the forumites guide me how to go about bringing in HI khuks to my door step. I hate the trip to the custom office and be asked some silly questions & then unable to collect them anyway bcos of some silly regulations.

Any feedback would be most welcome. Thks.

I do come across training with NK before, as for SE Asia, after 911, I think it will be very difficult to go thru post. Your best bet will be from up North, go thru land via Thailand. Find a Thai friend or so, you might be lucky to get some nice Thai DHas, I like Malaysia parangs as well. Maybe HI should make some DHA specials!
I might be stopping by next summer, could get some via luggage I think.. Ask the Malaysian forum folks..
Maybe even direct from HI Nepal shipped as farming tools to a Kumpong address!
Hope this helps.

I just messaged an acquaintence in KL, Malaysia and asked him the question. He is a knife collector too. Here's his answer.

"Howdy Steve, and greetings from Malaysia.. There are no restrictions as to length and blade type as long as it is a knife, not a sword. If the cost, freight and insurance is about USD$130, the buyer may be subjected to a 25% duty and 10% sales tax. Hope this helps.. "

Yangdu may have shipped to Malaysia before, so you could email her at himimp@aol.com and ask her the question as well.

Welcome!

Steve
Edit: We also have an Asian and Austalian forum on Bladforums. You could ask the question there as well. http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=716

This doesn't relate to the legal considerations of importing khuks to Malaysia, butI have had things shipped to me in Taiwan before and can tell you this:

1) In Taiwan, the price of shipping is calculated into the price of the item, and you are charged tax based on both.

2) It might be more expensive to use a carrier like UPS, but they can ship the item without listing the shipping cost on the invoice. This may lead to considerably less duty because of a lower declared value on the invoice. It may be worth it, it may not -- you will have to check it out and do the math yourself.

Good luck, and be careful of the regulations. I wouldn't want any kind of a charge against me for importing "weapons."

Hi, your friendly neighbour here in Singapore just collected my Battle Rat from customs... they held it cos of the length I suppose and I ended up paying 5% tax cos the value was more than SGD400.. and yes, they do add in the shipping costs as well... scums if you ask me!!!

You should have seen their faces when they saw the battle rat.. it was like.. "why is that thing so long?" LOL.... and its only a Battle Rat.. the first silly thing they said was, "it looks like a parang"... and I thought.. how can a parang be that short??

the next thing they said was "its very sharp", at this point I could not contain myself and and I laughed and said, "yeah, its a knife, i should think that its sharp.." ROFLMAO

FWIW... my Balance was also held by customs and I had to go down to the police station to collect it. Khks are actually banned in Singapore. The reason??? It's part of the police uniform (Singapore has an active contingent of Gurkhas and they come under the command of the police) I managed to convince the person in charge that it was for ornamental purpose.. (helps that this particular Balance had a to die for elk antler handle) he took one look at it and was convinced..

So that's my experience from someone across the causeway..

You might want to check if it is also banned in Malaysia as well.. but yeah.. you could always justify that its a farming implement...

Just another random thought.. will a bit of "coffee money" do the trick??

Oh, yes. The world famous Pay and Pay. Actually, you are very fortunate you got the khuk in at all. What an excuse... part of the uniform for one small contingent of the police force.

In the past "coffee money" would certainly do the trick, but now under the new administration, those guys are a little bit wary if they don't know you personally. I'll get someone who know some ppl in the customs dept and may be they'll go easy on me. I believe there's no hard & fast rules on importing knives & tax percentage - there are loopholes to be manipulated, I think.

I guess, I'll just wait until I am absolutely certain of those rules before ordering the pen knife...and after that 16.5 WWII...followed by CAK. Thanks guys for your inputs. For now, it looks like I have to stick to KH Service # 1 for awhile to do the hacking, chopping, and my old trusted golok for cutting small twigs.

If I am lucky, maybe some Malaysian (or the guy across the causeway - hi Tetsusaiga & thks)forumite/s take pity on me & offer to trade my NKH/KH khukris with an HI khuk.

Hi Arya.. NO WAY am I trading my Balance... considering that there will be no way for me to bring another khuk into the country right now... this Balance will be WELL TREASURED.....

I see the famous Pay and Pay is well and truly world famous or should I say it "notoriety" precedes it??

Well the other alternative method is to buy only if you are going to US and then bring it back via luggage I suppose...

I do recalled SG custom or postal services do permits Cultural Relics, or if you go for Reservists training in Thailand or others, maybe you can bypass customs as we did before (oldtimers Steel pot ITDSAFTIsSCE). Also SAF pilots, SIA pilots aircrew often get away with the custom checks. See if you know someone close!

Awww... that's the problem.. someone I know, just finished his stint in US and is already back home.. tough luck!!!
