Impressed with CPM D2

I have been alternating EDC between my Para D2 and Mini-Grip for a couple months now with the Para being a few weeks older. The Para every day for about 3 weeks and then I bought the mini and carried it every day for almost 2 weeks. Now the Para sees about 75% of EDC. Both knives have been used to cut open boxes, cardboard and tape along with some kitchen duty. I even did some whittling with the Para. I have NOT had to sharpen the Para yet, but the mini dulled rather quickly. I know 154CM is no slouch, but in my situation the CPM D2 seems to be a hands-down winner on edge retention. 154CM was not super easy to sharpen so if the D2 is no harder to sharpen I will be elated!

154cm and CPM-D2 are in completely different classes. CPM-D2 is going to be a little harder to sharpen than 154cm but not by much. CPM-D2 is also many times more wear resistant than the 154cm and will take a finer edge.

Any experience regarding standard D2 vs. CPM-D2?

D2 seems to be a little tougher and more resistant to chipping but is a bear to sharpen. CPM-D2 is much easier to sharpen but at thin angles tends to micro-chip real bad. The ability of CPM-D2 to take a extremely fine edge with little trouble also makes it nice, takes about half the time to strop and gets much sharper. As far as edge retention goes, that would be hard to say but I would give it too CPM-D2 because of the better micro structure of the steel.

I notice all of your hair splitting demo pictures show a CB JYD, is this because of CPM-D2's properties or is it just coincidence?

It likes being it front of a camera :D

Its a little bit because of its properties, its edge can get extremely sharp just like CPM-M4. Its also my mule for testing because its the only knife I have in CPM-D2.

I would concur that standard D2 is much tougher, and harder in my knives that use it.

CPM-D2 is a wonderful steel, the fine edge capabilities of 154CM, but more wear resistant. It's a TON easier to sharpen than standard D2.

I love both, and 154CM...cant go wrong with any of them, they are just all a bit different.

I have knives in both steels. I love D-2, but the CPM D-2 is finer grained and will take a more polished edge. I can't really tell any difference in edge holding.

of the 3 / cpmd2 has finer grain;however d2 with triple temper like doziers might out cut the others.know 154cm is a poor 3rd.havent had any cpm154 to test yet.members cotdt & soleil probably have extensive info on all 4 of these steels.they breathe ,eat &sleep steel testing.
