Seems like about 2 years ago that I heard about the Sig 716 .308 while I was at an armorer's school. Then a buddy saw one at the SHOT show 2 years ago and was quite impressed with the design. I saw my first one a couple of weeks ago in a local gunshop. It came with flip up sights, sling, quick detach sling swivels, rail covers, hard case, and awesome back pack tactical type soft case. It also came with a P-Mag. I probably paid too much but it is a good shop with great guys and I like to support the locals.

I threw a scope on it that was too high and shot two groups that were about 1 1/2 inches but the trigger was 7.5 lbs!!

I finally got a Gisella SSA trigger installed and robbed a Leupold Mark AR off another rifle. Today from a bench that was a bit wobbly I shot a 100 yard group that was an honest 1.091 outside to outside. So I estimate the group to be .783 center to center. I didn't have much time so I only fired the one group. I have 19 rounds fired so the rifle isn't even broken in yet. Trying to find a way with spare parts to rig a bipod before my Larue QD comes in. I think that will be more stable than the portable "bench" I have.

Here is the group described above. I am pretty impressed with the rifle so far.

Nice one
If your bottom rail has a stud hole you can just get a swivel stud at the shop cheap and then connect your bipod to it.
Im am sure you know this but it not.....

congrats

GG&G makes a railmount swival stud that will work great. If i was near my AR i would send pic.

Is that a 16" bbl? Great accuracy for a non-bolt gun... I'm impressed. I have a couple 'black guns' in 556 and the triggers on the AR platform are disturbing to me... But I do understand why they are made that way. One of these days I 'NEED' an AR platform 308.

Sig has had some quality control issues in their pistol line as of late (according to many folks on various gun forums), how was the reliability on your piece?

.308 16" ARs will surprise you. I put 35 rounds through mine on Sunday using 7 different types of powder, using CFE223 I put 3 shots touching each other at 100 yards using 168 grain Sierra Match Kings with my DPMS AP4 (but, also had some powders that just flung the bullets (Win748) with about a 2" spread :o)

.308 ARs are awesome, 16" barreled ones weigh so much they have little kick, just jump, and they're great at making lots of noise :D

Jerry, being piston driven, how much does that thing weigh? Mine empty without the scope weighs damn near 10lbs :o

Yes 16" barrel. It says 9.3 pounds unloaded without optic. I have a GG&G stud thing I am lookin for...thanks though. By the way I was shooting Fed 168 gr. Match ammo.

kdstrick-If you havn't tried a Giesselle SSA 2 stage trigger you should. It makes all the difference in shooting my AR's.

Heard about Sig quality control issues myself. Don't know what to say about that. The Sig 250 is the only bad Sig I have ever held with my own 2 hands. Relaiability is 100% so far with 716. It has an adjustable port so you can run clean, fowled, suppressed, or single shot.

Thanks for the answers fellas...

I'm no sissy... heavy rifles don't scare me a bit! I've been working out my core a lot lately. Mostly AB's. It's amazing how fast beer will develop you abdominal cavity. My abs are getting bigger by the beer!!!

But back to guns. I've looked into the DPMS 308... any thoughts?

:D

They tend to.....be thick. I've held a CMMG 308 AR with a 16" barrel and it weighed a touch over 8 pounds, my DPMS is damn near 10 naked

They're fun though, seems to be mag picky, works best with 20 round Pmags and 19 round DPMS mags. They're tough on brass usually, and can crunch a case pretty bad if it's a light load not ejecting or feeding properly. I've seemed to find a sweet spot where the rounds are accurate and the casings aren't hitting the shell defector too hard to deform a lot.

Oh, if you have an M4 barrel, they get hot pretty fast.

Overall though, I like them. My uncle picked up a 22" DPMS with a full quadrail, thing has to weigh 14 pounds. Zero kick and pretty damn accurate. He likes it a lot but he has his eye on an LWRC 7.62 REPR now :D

^^^^^^^^ good info, amigo~! I believe if I go with a 10- 14 lb rifle it would likely be bigger than 308. That is certainly not to criticize anyone else's choice, but maybe clarify mine. Been thinking about a 338 Lapua lately. My application is more hunting though. Or maybe zombies. Long range shooting is great fun. :D

Call me old fashioned... But only accurate rifles are interesting. That Sig seems to be a nice rifle, I look forward to seeing what it can do once its had a good workout and gets good and broken-in. Pretty impressive so far. Might have to pick one up! ;)

I have carried every possible pistol or rifle Sig makes over the years except their Russian and I have had one minor problem that they fixed right away. Liked UR rifle blog just got my Sig 716 2 months ago after nearly two years searching love to be back with 7.62 and it will group fantastic like UR experience shows.

I've looked at those, and they are nice, but wow what a pricetag. I went with the LMT MWS 308. It also uses the P-mag and I'm very happy with the 16.25 " barrel. Its my favorite of my "AR" configuration 308s. the Armalite AR 10 T, SASS and heck even their basic A4 model are all very nice. If I had to pick a comparable one, the SASS is one that Armalite really did its research on and shoots outstanding. I've got a sig 516, and its been good to go.. the HK versions of these are even more expensive.. makes you wonder how much a semi auto 308 can go for :). for comfort; none come close to my FN FAL 50-64 para

I was researching the SIG716, just this past weekend. Good timing, and keep us up to date on how it performs.

Hell I just now noticed this, but Jerry, is your forward mount a LaRue?
