Impressed with the Plain Master Series 110MSU

Just got one of these via our very own Paul Davidson, Thanks Paul!

The lock up and fit is excellent. But what blew me away was the edge that was on the knife when I opened it up! Man is this knife sharp, BG42, not sure of the heat treat so if someone would key me into this I would appreciate it. The hidden pins on the handle scales also make for a nice looking and comfortable handle.

I did some push cut tests on leather and this knife kicked blades! very sharp knife, did I already say this?

I missed out on the rush to shut down the Master Series knives and missed out on a 532, but I'll be happy with this one, not as fancy but very nice.

Good job Buck!

Glad you got your hands on one, Gary. That BG42 really gets scary sharp and seems to hold it well. I'm looking forward to the 532's and the Strider in this steel.
PS
only another 8 months (give or take

) till Rob finishes my Talonite Carny, I'm actually developing patience!

I have my heart set on a 532 with BG42 also!

And as to your patience, just keep looking in the mirror every morning and repeat that to yourself, `I'm a patient man, I can wait for that knife' then smile and turn away before you start to breakdown....;D

G2, I've been selling those knives for months, ever since I found out about them. I'm down to the last few and there are no more at the factory.

The heat treatment is by Paul Bos so I think it's fair to say that it is what it should be.

BTW, there was a "dealer" a few weeks ago that was GIVING these knives away. He claimed that they were "misrepresented" as real MS knives and weren't worth anything. I sell them for $69.00 and they are worth more. Go figure.

You got a gem there. Enjoy it.

PS, I'll drop you an E-mail as soon as your order goes out.

Dennis,
I saw the thread and thought the same thing. The give-away was legit. I got in on it and ordered a 560 Titanium that I needed to finish out my set. Turns out that he was out of stock and didn't know it. NOW for the surprise. He sent the 110MS overrun knife anyway including shipping and didn't charge me a dime. The knife is new in the box. I guess dreams do still come true.

I got mine as well. It came with a pair of
Buck game shears I bought for my wife. She
will be using the shears in the kitchen as
utility shears. So far, they are excellent
for that purpose, far exceeding the crummy
Chinese ones she had.
It is a very nice knife...I still don't know
how Cumberland Knives & Cutlery could give
them away, but they did. It came NIB,
complete with black leather belt sheath.
By the way, it is a 110MS blade. The "U"
that follows is the date stamp, signifying
the blade was produced in 1998.

Dave

PS I am sure they are out of the free knives,
FYI.

Right on Roadhand, you too warhawk. I know the givaway was legit and I also know all about those knives. For awhile, they were a good deal for me. I was actually able to make some money selling them.

I still have a hard time believeing that some one was dumb enough to give them away. At least you all were smart enough to recognize the deal and go for it. It just proves that the knife fairy does exist.

Incidently, Warhawk, the reason the blades are marked Master Series is that the knives were made up from parts left over after the limited run of true MS knives was complete in 1998. They are the real deal. You done good.

Can someone explain the difference to me, if any, between the 100MS and the 110s with BG-42 blade and green wooden slabs?

Also, is there a preferred way to sharpen the Buck 110s? Some of the earleir versions had a shape that was challenging to get a good edge on with a flat stone.

Any thoughts, suggestions or ideas would be appreciated.

Nimrod, the difference between the 110MS and the BG42 110 (There is no 100MS) is the Master Series knives had green checkered scales with a small medallion set into one of the scales, while the BG42 models that were offered later had smooth green wood scales.

The checkered scales were called "Diamondwood" and the smooth ones were called "Frenchwood". (I don't know why. They didn't tell me that.) Otherwise the knives are identical. The blades are the same.

Sharpening an older 110 can be challenging. Years ago I gave up trying to sharpen my first 110 that I bought in'71. I finally ended up regrinding the edge with the diamond sleeves on my Spyderco Sharpmaker. End of problem for me. I put something close to E2K on it somewhere around '85. (Am I ahead of my time or what?)

You're right about trying to sharpen that rounded edge with a flat stone. The best thing to do is send it to Buck Knives and have them put E2K on it. That will solve all of your sharpening problems and the new edge will amaze you. Well worth the cost of sending it in. Good luck.

Send it in
Buck Knives, Inc.
attn Joe Houser
1900 Weld Blvd
El Cajon CA 92020

Tell him you want the E2K treatment.

Edge 2000 will adjust the edge angles and set you where you just maintain it after that. The thinner edge will hold longer, be sharper than you can imagine and the flat angles will resharpen quickly.

The cost is $5 and we cover return postage.

Such a deal...
