First off, I was never a kukri fanboy. Had a machete version that failed me. I decided to purchase one that was bit more substantial. Scoured eBay, amazon, and search engines. Not being happy with those results, I turned to Reddit, and searched bladeforums. Time and time again I got directed to HI.

Checked the website, and my heart sank with seeing the prices for something I was so uncertain about. Then I heard about the blems. I actually managed to "shark" a bilton last Thursday, and through emails with Yangdu, managed to add a blemmed bone bashpati to the order.

Well, they arrived today and I quickly set about testing the new blades on a 2x4. All I can say is that I'm left dumb founded and amazed at these. The weight, balance, just everything is beyond imagination.

All I'm left wondering is how to use the dull mini knife (chakram?).

But thank you to Yangdu for the wonderful service; the kamis for the amazing craftsmanship; and the community for sending me to this wonderful corner of the interwebs. You have made me a convert, and I will preach the good name of HI. And definitely will order more (chiruwa ak next I think)!!!!!!

Welcome to the club! Well, these are not the average, stainless steel mass-produced kitchen sink knives we are talking about. These blades are hand forged by master craftsmen and the quality speaks for itself! Personally, I think these blades are a bargain at full price and a real steal on DOTD/Blems...

Sorry you had such a long round about trip finding us and HI but your traveling as you already have learned was worth the trip.

Glad you found us and while I'm not terribly fond of the phrase fan boy I guess I are one.

Here's to many more high quality HI blades just for you.

There are other more knowledgable individuals on this forum that can answer your question concerning the two little things. I know what they're for, but my knowledge is extraordinarily limited with the actual names of the parts. One is for small cutting tasks, such as fruit, and the other for straightening out the blade edge when needed out in the field.

The chakma is a sharpening steel. Think of it like one of those round steels you see in kitchen knife blocks, just shorter and flatter. It's for minor honing of the khukuri's edge.

The other sharp little knife is called the karda.

Thanks Phillll, for some reason, the chakma & karda, just don't seem to stay in my head....

If you were dumb founded by the way those small blades performed on a 2x4, your head might explode when you try a CAK for the first time. I suggest you start with a 15" CAK, something in the 20-24 oz weight range. The "standard" CAK size is 16.5" and around 30 oz if you order from the HI web site, but you can find smaller and larger as DOTD if you are patient and move fast when they are posted. Be warned: A CAK is not a replacement for a machete; perhaps a replacement for a small axe, and more versatile.

congratulations on finding the rare gem that is himalayan imports! can't go wrong with an ang khola....as long as its 20" or under...

welcome to the club ! and I hope you buy many many more, there is truly nothing like the hand crafted knives at HI

Yeah I can't wait til i can find a CAK.

I had the machete as a "can't find anything better for the weight" tool. As I'm not in a jungle loose vegetation isn't a concern. I only need it for camping and such.

I do think the bilton will replace my kabar as my hunting blade.

The only downside I've found thus far to the kukri is the lack of an ability to hammer.

Enjoy your kukri!

I very much enjoy swinging this around when outdoors, beast is the only word that fits the bill. Mine is the slender sirupati too, havent ordered the massive ones yet but give me time haha.

Ok. I really have to ask because I can't seem to find the answer... Does HI do custom work? And if so, what's the pricing like?

Yes they do custom work but I think its on hold at the moment until they get their normal catalog inventory to where they want it. They just moved the shop to new location and had to stop production so inventory took a hit. Aunti commonly has models in stock that may not be in the catalog and may fit your needs perfectly and below "custom" pricing. Usually if she has it then it will be in your hands day after next as you may have noticed. She has a magic carpet at the post office or something? When she says she will ship it out right now she means it! Many more amazing Khuks to explore here. Enjoy! BTW: Welcome to HI.
