impressions of my afck ii with m2hs

got a nice package in the mail from newgraham.com earlier this week. inside was my new afck ii.

my reasons for choosing the afck ii instead of the afck axis: while i've played with the axis (on both tsek and griptillian) and found it very cool, i'm of the school of thought that the less complicated something is, the less can go wrong with it. being right handed, the liner lock didn't really present any challenges for me.

after getting it in hand, my first impression was how light and thin the knife is. my previous edcs included a Ti handled KFF, a crkt pointguard, and occasionally a Ti handled spydie lum tanto. the bm is very unobstrusive in the pocket, and would be hard to notice IWB, even with extended wear. the handle shape and texture is ergonomically excellent. the opening hole is placed perfectly. the liner lock is authoritative and solid. there is no discernable blade play up/down or side/side. i didn't try torquing it, but for a majority of cutting tasks, this won't be an issue.

the m2 blade came shaving sharp out of the box. i disassembled the shipping box with the knife and it cut through the cardboard without any problems. overall, i'm very happy with my purchase.

one side note: i've seen in the forum people mentioning the bt coating getting all messed up after consistent use. does this affect the performance of the blade, or is the blemish purely cosmetic?

i understand why this design continues to be so popular with people.

on a side note: i love the fact that new graham ships knives with band-aids included.

:D

peace,

steve

the messed up coating will not affect the performance of the knife - the coating is still there - just that the black colour will have scratches on the blade as if all the coating have been worn off.

I received an M2 Mini AFCK this past Christmas. The M2 cuts through cardboard like butter.

I hear its hard to sharpen but so far I've not had to sharpen mine yet.

I am really laughing from your band-aid comment. I also got a package last wednesday from New Graham with a D2 AFCK enclosed. My wife laughed laughed out loud when she saw them (as I had a band-aid over my thumb tip due to a loss of flesh there from a little cooking accident with my Sydie Santoku:D ) Never got a knife faster from a company. New Graham was awesome. I debated nad debated between the M2 and the D2 models but didn't own axis lock yet so said what the heck. Looking at an m2 7xx series next. If you get bored with yours though I will allow you to send it to me if you get bored with it;) Thanks for the review and let us know how it holds up. Who knows maybe I'll have to just breakdown and have two AFCK's:D

P.S. Try to keep from having to use the band-aids

The BM AFCK in a few variations continues to be perennial favorites in my carry rotation. Either the ATS34, M2 or the most current D2 Axis version will be keepers. With the exception of the D2 model, I have needed to reprofile their edge bevels to a more narrow angle in order to achieve greater slicing ability. Coming from the factory, they were simply too obtuse to be effective cutters. Without doubt, the M2 versions blade edge angle was the most difficult to reprofile. Even on Sharpmaker diamond sleeves, an extended effort was required. The M2 has the highest carbon content with almost no chromium present. Hard steel, low stain resistance. Very hard steel.

Just the other night i touched up the edge on my M2 mini AFCK on my sharpmaker. I didn't have any problem getting it back to shaving sharp with the medium and fine grit files. It's been a great knife for me.
