Hi,

this one is really impressing me.

I got a lot of knives since the 80's. I have tested a lot of knives since 1995.
You mileage may vary but like everyone I got my favorite regarding pure cutting power, ease of resharping, ergos...
For example the SPyderco Bushcrafter is one of my joy to use in the wood. My 1990's ATS 34 Sebenza has proven many time to be reliable in the worst situation.
I'm amazed by my Paramilitary S90V edge holding capabilities.
For push cutting in wood, my Blue Dodo has always a phenemonal performer, the S shap thin edge is getting deep.
Then the thin Michael Walker and the Gayle Bradley have been demonstrating all their power on hard plastic and delicate works.

Now that Taiwanese Cold Steel Recon 1 Spear Point is thin ground. I have removed the black whatever paint.

And after stropping the blade to a dangerous whittling hair level, this big folder is breaking my own records. I was able to cut through the thick butt of plastic bottle twice in parallel cuts with ease. The handle is so confortable, I can apply a lot of strenght and the hollow ground powerful blade separate material like it's butter.
I'm really really impressed and will continue my tests.

I like the black paint on the Recon but it's look pretty sweet without it too. How long does that gel stuff have to sit before you can strip the paint off?

Oh, 20 minutes. It took me less than an hour to remove the black paint.
I have decided to keep the blade mounted on the handle during the process and not to take it apart.
So it took me more time...

I agree. People can make fun all day but Cold Steel is no joke. They make a really good solid knife with a monster lock. The Recon 1's are awesome!

Never had a Cold Steel knife that didn't cut well: SRK, tanto, Master Hunter, Twistmasters, Voyagers and Red River elk hunter.

I've been thinking about the Recon 1 Tanto for a do everything beater and wondered if the G-10 is still so aggressive that its rough on your jeans pocket? Nice looking knife by the way. Congratulations!

Some sandpaper and holding your breath as g10 is toxic...
And the handle is cured. :-)

Nice, you can also wet the handle and sand away. Rinse as you go. Like the spear even better than the clip.

Have the tanto 4" with combo edge. I work in an auto shop and don't ask me why I did it but was amazed when it cut right thru a set of heavy gauge jumper cables with one hard rip of the knife. No damage and still sharp as all get out!

The Spear point seems to have a shorter choil and longer edge than the clip point too.
Juste comparing pics. :-)

Can you elaborate on how you did this/ why? Im interested to know =]

Hey sorry, just went back through the posts and found it. It was pretty easy, but first I stripped using chemicals and elbow grease... (stuff is tough) I stripped with the parts together so the innerworkings are still coated with the black paint. Then I used a cutoff wheel on a die grinder to cut the slot. Then used files and progessions of sandpaper to clean up the channel and hand tune it to wave correctly. You could probably do the cut with a dremel, but its going to take a lot longer. Basically you have to lock the blade down in a vice and do a little bit of a cut at a time so you do not overheat the blade. After everything was cut and cleaned up pretty I made an acid solution of muriatic acid... I forget the initial acidity but you want to take that down a bit so its not super aggressive. I used hot water and added a bit of acid to it, then I just dunked the blade.... Did not even take it apart just used some wire to hang it in the acid until I reached my desired color and depth. (Make sure you wear proper safety eye equipment and chemical resistant gloves) After a couple washes with soap and water I took it and re profiled the edge freehand on my stones, then submerged the whole thing in penetrating oil to get all the innerworkings all lubed up. This blade also had its pocket clip done the same way, had to remove it to do it though... also the knife was completely serviced including reloctiting screws etc etc. Thats about it. If you have any questions just let me know. The key is just to take your time with the cut and think it out. I put the cut in a very specific area as to not interfere with the thumb stud and just be out of the way while still providing optimal leverage. You will see other guys who remove the thumb stud and cut into the hole to make the knife wave, but once that is done you cannot thumb open anymore and where is the fun in that? So my mod allows the knife to function as an easy wave, that doesnt get in the way, and still allows you to choose out of pocket if you want it to wave or not (no accidental waving)

I have owned the clip point Recon for a couple years now and I must say that Lynn's Aus8 can no doubt be brought to a razors edge. It has delivered every time me or the wife has needed it. Looks much better now that the cheap coating has been taken off.
