Had an impromptu gathering today With Tonym and Marcelo, We met half way, and went to one of my favorite secret shrafting spots. As usual a great time was had.. We played around with lots of skils including friction fire, trap making ( I have to catch up on some fig 4's for my other thread) and some improvised water purification techniques. I'l put up some pics but i'm sure the guys wil ad more.

a full boil of believe it or not 64 oz f water..Pretty god I thought, ALthough the experiment was successfu the heat removed some of the mylar.. perhaps making it less that awesome to drink,, I think a tarp or poncho would have been a better choice.

As always it was a blast.. and a sincere pleasure to enjoy an awesome fall day with to experienced woodsman, I learned allot. Can't wait for next time

John it has been too long since we hing out bro. I had alot of laughs and learned alot from you. You got the technique on that Kukri down pretty quick bro. I wouldn't want to do all that detailed carving whith a khuk, but you made it look easy.

Anyway, here are the pics I got.

John and Marcelo handled the fire lay and Marcelo made a couple of legs for a grill we found so we could do a little cooking over the fire.

I wanted to get a friction fire from found wood, but with all the rain we had, my picking was limited. I did find some decently dry fallen Oak tree. I have had sucess with White Oak before, but this was Red Oak. I decided to give it a try anyway.

Got smoke and some decent powder but my arm gave out every time before any coal formed. John and Marcelo tried as well with the same result.

We also tried a two stick method with White Pine. Their wasn't any sucess with that either.

In the mean time Marcelo got the fire started with his ferro rod. No patience... John never used a Freznel lens to get a fire, so we messed around with that.

Then we made some traps.

Here's John with his new Khuk, which he made all his traps with.

More to come..

Hell, John even used the Knuk to cut the cheese!

Meanwhile back at the fire. The little legs we put under the grill were doing great at holding our cups up as we heated up water.

That was until one of the wooden legs burned through. ooops...

Oh well, we just threw the guyot right in there.

I haven't made a figure 4 trap in a while so I did 1 as well.

And not to be totally beaten by the friction fire, I grabbed a basswood set that John bought with him, but hasn't used yet.
Took no time to get the coal with Basswood

As we played, so did the dogs.

more coming

Here's that boiling basin John was talking about. It did boil the water, but I would have to be pretty desperate to drink that crap.

and here are some miscellaneous pics..

Thats all, I hope all of you's had a great day as well.
